The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in collaboration with other government agencies and development partners will conduct the 13th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) on 3-4 October 2016 at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong City. 
 
Largest Event for Statisticians, Data Producers and Users in the Philippines
 
Held every three years, the Convention is the biggest gathering of statisticians, data providers and users as well as other stakeholders of statistics.  Through the years, the Convention has become an excellent forum for various users and producers of statistics to funnel new ideas, share experiences in the field of statistics and discuss the prevailing issues and challenges in the country in which statistics play a key role.
 
The triennial conduct of the NCS has been a venue for strengthening cooperation amongst statisticians and other professionals in related fields from government, academia and the private sector.
 
Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count
 
With the national commitment to pursue the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, this year’s Convention theme is “Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count”.  The Convention also marks the opening ceremony of the 27th National Statistics Month (NSM), which also carries the same theme. 
 
The highlights of the Convention will be the keynote address to be delivered by The Honorable Ernesto M. Pernia, Secretary for Socioeconomic Planning and Director-General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), and the two plenary sessions on the SDGs and Ambisyon Natin 2040
 
Illustrious speakers for the plenary sessions include, among others:
       
  • The Honorable Rosemarie G. Edillon, Deputy Director General for Policy and Planning of the NEDA
  • Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General of PSA
  • Dr. Johannes Jütting, Manager of the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21)
New Sessions on Informal Sector, K-12 Education, Data Revolution, Market Research, Financial Inclusion and Education, ASEAN Integration, Hunger and Local-level Statistics 
 
A total of 49 scientific sessions will be organized during the Convention. Meanwhile, 42 topics will be discussed covering statistical theory and methodology, innovations and improving business processes, statistical applications in the private sector, economic progress, social development, biostatistics and bioinformatics, sustainability, environment and natural resources, and other multi-sectoral statistics.

Scientific papers on emerging socioeconomic and environmental concerns include the following:
  • The Multidimensional Poverty Index

Statistical Information Management Exhibit, Student-Faculty Conference and Lecture Sessions on R and Infographics
 
Aside from the scientific sessions on statistics that cover the SDGs and other topics, the Convention will feature the Statistical Information Management Exhibit (SIMEx) – a commercial exhibition of the latest software, hardware and other products for statistical information and management.
 
A tutorial session on R, organized by the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI), will be provided by Dr. Joselito C. Magadia, Professor in the University of the Philippines Diliman School of Statistics (UPSS). Meanwhile, the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI) will organize the lecture on infographics with Prof. Jose Lorenzo A. Yambot of the UP Los Baños Institute of Statistics (UPINSTAT) serving as instructor.
 
The 17th Faculty-Student Conference on Statistical Sciences will also be a side event in the Convention. The Faculty-Student Conference on Statistical Sciences is jointly organized by the UPSS, the UPINSTAT and the PSRTI.  It is expected that about 200 faculty and students nationwide will join the Faculty-Student Conference and approximately 20 paper presentations will be presented during the conference.

Participants who register online must secure a printed copy of the e-mail from “Philippine Statistics Authority Conventions” confirming their registration. A copy of the proof of payment (official receipt or deposit slip) must be presented at the registration booth during the NCS.
