The year-on-year growth of the Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) further slowed down by 1.4 percent in June 2017. It went up by 2.4 percent in May 2017 and 1.3 percent in June 2016. Negative annual rates were still noted in the indices of cement at -1.8 percent; plywood, -0.9 percent; and PVC pipes, -0.2 percent. Moreover, slower annual hikes were registered in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Concrete Products (0.4%)
  • Hardware (0.8%)
  • Lumber (1.9%)
  • Reinforcing Steel (0.5%)
  • Painting Works (1.0%)
  • Fuels and Lubricants (6.7%).

Meanwhile, the indices of the following commodity groups exhibited higher annual increments:

  • Sand and Gravel (2.8%)
  • G.I. Sheet (0.4%)
  • Structural Steel (1.8%)
  • Tileworks (1.7%)
  • Doors, Jambs, and Steel Casement (3.5%).

The index of electrical works likewise inched up by 0.2 percent after it posted a 0.3 percent decline in the previous month. The rest of the commodity groups had zero growth during the month with the index of plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks retaining its previous month’s rate of 1.1 percent (see Table 2).

Month-on-Month

The CMWPI in NCR dropped by 0.4 percent in June 2017 from zero growth in the previous month. The indices of the following commodity groups went down during the month:

  • Cement (-0.5%)
  • Lumber (-0.4%)
  • Reinforcing Steel (-1.4%)
  • Plumbing Fixtures and Accessories/Waterworks (-0.1%)
  • Fuels and Lubricants (-1.5%).

In addition, a slower increase of 0.1 percent was noticed in the index of sand and gravel. Meanwhile, the indices of the following commodity groups picked up during the month from zero growth in May 2017:

  • Hardware (0.3%)
  • G.I. Sheet (0.2%)
  • Tileworks (0.6%)
  • Painting Works and PVC Pipes (0.1%).

A zero growth was posted in the indices for the rest of the commodity groups (see Table 3).

Price decreases were observed in gasoline, diesel, bunker fuel oil, cement and steel bars during the month. Upward adjustments were, however, seen in the prices of gravel, hardware, G.I. sheet, vinyl tiles, paints and PVC pipes.
