The annual change of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) picked up by 4.2 percent in June 2018. Its rate in the previous month was registered at 4.1 percent and in June 2017, 3.3 percent. Higher annual increments were observed in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Food (4.7%);

  • Crude Materials, Inedible Except Fuels (1.9%);

  • Mineral Fuels, Lubricants and Related Materials (23.5%);

  • Manufactured Goods Classified Chiefly by Materials (2.7%); and

  • Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles (1.2%).

Meanwhile, the annual increases in the indices of beverages and tobacco slowed down to 11.9 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 1.1 percent; and machinery and transport equipment, 1.5 percent (see Table 2).

By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

On a monthly basis, the GRPI in NCR rose by 0.4 percent in June 2018. In the previous month, its rate was posted at 0.2 percent.

  • The heavily-weighted food index went up by 0.8 percent in June 2018. This was due to higher prices of eggs, pork, chicken, milk, cheese, fish, rice, corn, vegetables, sugar, powdered tonic drinks and fish sauce.

  • The index of crude materials, inedible except fuels picked up by 0.2 percent brought about by the increments in the prices of gravel and charcoal.

  • The index of manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials moved upward by 0.3 percent. Paper products, and selected construction materials were priced higher during the month.

  • The index of miscellaneous manufactured articles inched up by 0.3 percent in June 2018. Upward adjustments in the prices of selected clothing, footwear and school supplies were noted during the period.

  • Price increases were observed in alcoholic beverages, softdrinks and cigarettes. Thus, the beverages and tobacco index went up by 0.2 percent during the period. This was however, slower than its previous month’s rate of 0.3 percent.

  • Compared to previous month, price hikes of petroleum products such as gasoline, LPG, diesel and kerosene were lower during the period. This resulted to a slower rate of increment in the index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials at 0.8 percent.

  • The index for machinery and transport equipment posted less than zero percent in June 2018. Decreases in the prices of selected electrical wires were observed during the period.

  • A minimal rate of increase of 0.01 percent was noted in the index of chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats. Prices of paints and medicines slightly moved upward during the month.
