MONTH-ON-MONTH2012 Census of Agriculture and Fisheries

Slower increases in the prices of consumer items were registered at the national level as the growth decelerated to 0.3 percent in October. Its rate in the previous month was recorded at 0.5 percent. This was mainly effected by the downward adjustment in the index of transport at -0.3 percent. On the other hand, uptrends were seen in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco at 0.5 percent; recreation and culture, 0.2 percent; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.4 percent. The index of communication also went up by 0.1 percent from zero growth in the previous month. The rest of the commodity groups either moved at their previous month’s rate or had zero growth (see Table 7).

Price rollbacks in petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and engine oil and downward adjustments in air and ship fares were noted in many provinces during the month. In addition, the onset of harvest of palay during the period caused the rice index in nine regions including NCR to post monthly decreases. Lower prices of sugar, selected condiments and seasonings were also noticed in many regions.

On the other hand, higher charges for electricity rates and upward adjustments in the prices of selected construction materials, LPG and kerosene were registered in many regions this month. Moreover, increased salaries of carpenters, electricians, plumbers, masons and painters were recorded in NCR and in selected provinces.
