Bermuda Onion (Red Creole and Yellow Granex)

  • The January to March 2018 production of bermuda onion dropped by 4.4 percent, from 102.10 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2017 to 97.64 thousand metric tons this year. The decline in production was affected by the following:
    • decreased area harvested and yield in Central Luzon (Nueva Ecija) due to damages caused by army worms; and
    • some areas planted to bermuda onion in Nueva Ecija last year were planted with palay to stop the recurrence of army worms.
  • Central Luzon had the highest production of 84.76 thousand metric tons which represents 86.8 percent of the country’s total bermuda onion. This was followed by Cagayan Valley and MIMAROPA with 8.2 percent and 2.6 percent shares, respectively.
