Major Vegetables and Root Crops Quarterly Bulletin, January - March 2018

January 2018 to March 2018

Native Onion

  • For January to March 2018, production of native onion went down by 2.9 percent, from 27.31 thousand metric tons in 2017 to 26.53 thousand metric tons this year.
  • The decrease in output was attributed to shifting of crops planted in some areas to bermuda onion and yellow corn production in Ilocos Region (Ilocos Norte) due to availability of seeds from the LGUs.
  • Ilocos Region, the biggest producer of native onion, contributed 24.89 thousand metric tons or 93.8 percent to the national total this quarter. This was followed by Central Luzon with 6.0 percent share.
