Major Vegetables and Root Crops Quarterly Bulletin, January - March 2018

January 2018 to March 2018

Sweet Potato

  • In January to March 2018, production of sweet potato dropped to 110.91 thousand metric tons, from 112.24 thousand metric tons in 2017 or by 1.2 percent. Among the factors that caused the decline were the following:
    • lesser area and tubers harvested in Central Visayas (Negros Oriental), CALABARZON (Quezon), and Eastern Visayas (Leyte) due to rotting of roots caused by frequent rains;
    • lesser tubers produced in Central Visayas (Negros Oriental) due to effect of sweet potato weevil; and
    • decreased area planted in Western Visayas (Iloilo) due to low price last year.
  • Bicol Region was the highest contributor with 21.98 thousand metric tons or 19.8 percent of total sweet potato production this quarter. Eastern Visayas ranked second with 12.1 percent contribution followed by Western Visayas with 11.8 percent share.
