Seasonally Adjusted Consumer Price Index (2018=100): April 2024

1. Philippines

The country’s seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all items posted a slower month-on-month increase of 0.2 percent in April 2024 from a 0.3 percent month-on-month increment recorded in  March 2024.

Similarly, slower monthly increments were also noted in the seasonally adjusted CPI of the following commodity groups:

          a. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, 0.4 percent from 0.7 percent;
          b. Clothing and footwear, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent; and
          c. Health, 0.2 percent from 0.4 percent.

On the other hand, the transport index registered a 0.3 percent month-on-month increase during the month from a 0.1 percent decrease recorded in the previous month.

Meanwhile, the monthly rate in the deseasonalized CPI of furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, and personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services remained at their previous month’s rates of 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

The housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels index posted zero percent monthly rate in April 2024 from a 0.2 percent decrease in March 2024.

The seasonal factors, such as the degree of demand for selected goods and services during the season, pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

          a. Clothing and footwear;
          b. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels;  
          c. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance; and
          d. Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services.

The seasonal factors, however, pulled down the indices for all items, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and transport. However, the health index was not affected by the seasonal factors. (Table 1)


2. National Capital Region (NCR)       

In NCR, the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items recorded 0.1 percent month-on-month decrease in April 2024 from a 0.2 percent increase in March 2024.

Likewise, the monthly rate of food and non-alcoholic beverages index was recorded at 0.2 percent decline in April 2024 from a 0.6 percent increase in March 2024. Moreover, the month-on-month rate of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels index dropped further by 0.7 percent during the month from a 0.3 percent decrease in the previous month.

On the other hand, monthly increments in the deseasonalized CPI of health and personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services both slowed down to 0.1 percent in April 2024 from 0.2 percent increment in March 2024.

Meanwhile, the furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance index posted a 0.1 percent month-on-month increase from 0.1 percent monthly decrease recorded in the previous month.

The seasonal factors, such as the degree of demand for selected goods and services during the season, pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups:

          a. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; 
          b. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance; and 
          c. Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services.

The seasonal factors, however, pulled down the indices for all items and food and non-alcoholic beverages, while it did not affect the health index. (Table 2)
 

3. Areas Outside National Capital Region (AONCR)

In AONCR, the monthly increment in the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items remained at 0.4 percent in April 2024.

Similarly, the monthly increases in the deseasonalized CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages, and education services remained at 0.6 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, slower monthly increases were noted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

          a. Clothing and footwear, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent;
          b. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 0.2 percent from 0.3 percent;
          c. Health, 0.2 percent from 0.3 percent; and
          d. Restaurants and accommodation services, 0.3 percent from 0.9 percent.

From a 0.1 percent month-on-month decrease recorded in March 2024, the seasonally adjusted CPI for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, and transport posted monthly increases of 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent in April 2024, respectively.

The seasonal factors, such as the degree of demand for selected goods and services during the season, pushed up the indices of the following commodity groups: 

          a. Clothing and footwear;   
          b. Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels;   
          c. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance;
          d. Health; and
          e. Restaurants and accommodation services.

The seasonal factors, however, pulled down the indices for all items, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and education services. Meanwhile, the transport index was not affected by the seasonal factors. (Table 3)
