1. Rationale and objectives
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in collaboration with the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) is organizing the Country Workshop on Access to New Data Sources for Official Statistics: Business Models for Big Data to be held on
22-23 June 2016 at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ortigas Center, Quezon City, Philippines.
The objective of the Country Workshop is to bring together data producers and users in the Philippines to review current practices in the country on using alternative data sources, challenges and constraints, lessons learnt, and opportunities in using new data sources (e.g., telecom data, social media, sensors, credit card records, perception surveys, etc.) to enrich official statistics in a developing country setting.
The workshop aims to discuss/examine aspects such as: (1) context of big data in a developing country perspective, (2) availability and access to big data, (3) privacy and confidentiality issues, (4) ownership and sharing, and (5) regulation and partnership.
The workshop expects the participation of data producers both local and foreign, which include various members of the Philippine Government such as the PSA Board Members and other government agencies and state universities and colleges which have stake on big data.
Participants also include telephone companies, data providers, international organizations and foreign companies that are involved in the collection and utilization of big data. Selected countries in the Asia and the Pacific region are also expected to attend. The workshop will be facilitated by the Standards Service of the PSA.
