During the first quarter of 2018, two (2) barangays were created in the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Ifugao and ten (10) barangays were created as a result of fragmentation of four (4) barangays. Meanwhile, the four (4) original barangays were delisted in the PSGC bringing the total number of barangays to 42,044.
In summary, the following are the updates/changes in the PSGC masterlist for the first quarter of 2018:
I. Creation of barangays
- Barangay Naibuan in the municipality of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, was created pursuant to Sanggunian Panlalawigan Resolution No. 138 series of 2007, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the Commission of Elections (COMELEC) on 05 January 2018.
- Barangay Liwon, in the municipality of Asipulo, Ifugao, was created pursuant to Republic Act No. 10957, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on 24 March 2018.
II. Division of barangays
- Barangay North Bay Boulevard South was split into Barangay NBBS Kaunlaran, Barangay NBBS Dagat-dagatan, and Barangay NBBS Proper in City of Navotas, NCR, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10933, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on 05 January 2018.
- Barangay Tangos was divided into Barangay Tangos North and Barangay Tangos South in City of Navotas, NCR, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10934, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on 05 January 2018.
- Barangay Tanza was divided into Barangay Tanza 1 and Barangay Tanza 2 in City of Navotas, NCR, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10935, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on 05 January 2018.
- Barangay Dumalneg was split into Barangay Cabaritan, Barangay Kalaw, and Barangay Quibel in the municipality of Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10955, which was ratified through a plebiscite conducted by the COMELEC on 24 March 2018.
Other update includes the transfer of Barangay Rizal from Municipality of Burdeos to Municipality of Panukulan in the Province of Quezon pursuant to Supreme Court decision on 04 January 2013 which is already final and executory as recorded in the Book of Entries of Judgement.
Per PSGC updating procedure, in fragmenting a barangay, the mother/original barangay shall retain its Barangay Code, and the new barangays created out of the fragmentation shall be treated as newly created barangay/s and shall be assigned new Barangay Code/s which corresponds to the last number in the sequence of barangay codes within the affected city/municipality. Likewise, when a barangay was transferred to another municipality, it shall be treated as a newly created barangay that will be assigned a new code following the sequence on the last entry in the coding system.
With these updates, the latest number of regions, provinces, cities, municipalities, and barangays in country is shown below:

The compilation of the PSGC is a collaborative effort of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and its Technical Working Group on Geographic Code (TWGGC).
