Cattle production for the first quarter of 2018 almost remained at the same level a year ago.  Production was estimated at 61,986 metric tons, liveweight from last year’s output of   61,983 metric tons.  Northern Mindanao recorded the highest cattle production at 9,807 metric tons, followed by Ilocos Region with 6,898 metric tons, and Central Visayas Region with 6,227 metric tons. These regions comprised almost 40 percent of the country’s cattle production. 

 
 
 
As of January 1, 2018, the total cattle inventory increased by 0.25 percent from its level of 2,547,614 heads a year ago.  Inventory in backyard farms increased by 0.59 percent, while stocks in commercial farms decreased by 4.90 percent from last year’s head count.   Bulk of cattle stocks were recorded in Ilocos Region, Central Visayas, and CALABARZON.  These regions contributed about 33.12 percent to the total cattle population.
 
 
 
The average farmgate price of cattle in the first quarter of 2018 was 7.55 percent higher than last year’s average farmgate price of PhP 96.52 per kilogram, liveweight. This year’s farmgate price for the first quarter was PhP 103.80 per kilogram, liveweight
 

 

Technical Notes

This Cattle Situation Report presents the cattle industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type, and average farmgate prices. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for our various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year. 
 
Concepts and Definitions:
 
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in thousand metric tons, liveweight.
 
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date. 
 
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
