In the second quarter of 2018, chicken egg production reached 131.10 thousand metric tons or an increase of 7.94 percent compared to the production in the same period of 2017. An increasing trend in chicken egg production in a three-year period was recorded with highest growth in 2018. (Table 1)
 
CALABARZON remains the highest producing region with production of 38.37 thousand metric tons. This was followed by Central Luzon with 24.95 thousand metric tons, and Northern Mindanao with 13.08 thousand metric tons. These three (3) regions accounted for 58.28 percent of the chicken egg production.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Laying flock inventory of native/improved chicken was registered at 22.62 million birds or 3.09 percent increase relative to its level in the second quarter of 2017. On the other hand, laying flock inventory of foreign strain layers was recorded at 31.31 million birds or 8.25 percent increase from the previous year’s level. (Table 2) 
 
Of the total inventory of laying flock, 58.06 percent were foreign strain layer chicken and the rest were native/improved chicken.
 
 
 
 
 
 
In the second quarter of 2018, average farmgate price of chicken egg in commercial farms was pegged at PhP 4.35 per piece, lower by 7.18 percent from last year’s price level. From 2016 to 2018, the highest recorded increment in chicken egg farmgate price was in 2017 with PhP 4.69 per piece or 6.76 percent growth rate. (Table 3)

This Chicken Egg Situation Report presents the chicken egg industry in terms of volume of production,inventory by chicken type and average farmgate price. The report was prepared to serve as ready reference for our various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly on January, May, August and November every year. 
 
Concepts and Definitions
 
Volume of Production refers to the volume of chicken egg disposed from locally-raised chicken including those table eggs which were shipped-out to other region/province.
 
Inventory refers to the actual number of chicken layers and native present in the farm as of a specific reference date. 
 
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
