Higher annual increment of Construction Materials Wholesale Price Index (CMWPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) is noted during the month

The year-on-year change of CMWPI in NCR picked up by 3.5 percent in August 2019. In the previous month, the annual rate was 3.0 percent and in August 2018, 4.6 percent. Relative to their previous month’s annual rates, higher annual increases were observed in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Sand and gravel, 10.5 percent;
  • Concrete products and cement, 4.8 percent;
  • G.I. sheet, 3.8 percent;
  • Tileworks, 4.0 percent; and
  • Plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 4.6 percent.

In addition, from a negative annual rate in the previous month, the annual change of reinforcing and structural steel index rose by 1.3 percent. On the other hand, slower annual gains were recorded in the indices of the following commodity groups during the month:

  • Hardware, 1.1 percent;
  • Plywood, 2.0 percent;
  • Lumber, 4.1 percent;
  • Electrical works, 3.1 percent; and
  • PVC pipes, 3.5 percent.

The indices of doors, jambs, and steel casement registered annual decreases of 0.2 percent; and painting works and fuel and lubricants, 0.1 percent. The rest of the commodity groups had a zero growth during the month (see Table 2).

Month-on-month change of CMWPI in NCR moves upward

The month-on-month change of CMWPI in NCR inched up by 0.8 percent in August 2019. Its rate of change in July 2019 was recorded at -0.3 percent. Higher monthly hike was noted in the index of reinforcing and structural steel at 2.1 percent. Moreover, from negative monthly rates in July 2019, the indices of concrete products and cement during the period increased by 0.4 percent; tileworks, 3.0 percent; and plumbing fixtures and accessories/waterworks, 0.2 percent. A slower monthly uptick of 0.3 percent was, however, seen in the indices of sand and gravel and G.I. sheet. In addition, monthly declines were posted in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Hardware, 0.01 percent;
  • Plywood, 0.1 percent;
  • Electrical works; painting works and PVC pipes, 0.2 percent; and
  • Fuels and lubricants, 1.2 percent.

The rest of the commodity groups had a zero growth during the month (see Table 3).
