October 16, 1936 - President Manuel L. Quezon signed the said bill into law.

March 1, 1937 - the formal inauguration was held.

Late 70's - the logging industry declined and focused on the banana industry. The province then became the largest exporter of banana.

Early 80's - the city that was called the "sleeping city" was distracted by guerillas and leftist. From time to time, killing on the streets became an ordinary event in the city.

1985 - Davaoeños formed a vigilante group called "Alsa Masa" to drive away the guerillas from the city.

After so many problems encountered by the city, still the people make ways to be recognized and proud. It is now one of the fastest growing cities in the Philippines.

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11thcensus of population and 5thcensus of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.

Being a highly urbanized city, the population of Davao City was excluded in the population counts of Davao del Sur. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.
