Number of deaths increase by 0.9 percent in 2014
 
For the past 10 years (2004-2014), the number of deaths in the Philippines increased continuously.  In 2014, a total of 536,999 deaths were recorded with an increase of 0.9 percent from 2013. The highest percentage of increase in the span of 10 years was recorded in 2005 with 5.7 percent. On the other hand, the lowest increase was recorded in 2007 with 0.2 percent only. (See Figure 1 and Table 1)
 
 
Region IV-A has the highest record of deaths
 
Among regions of the country, the highest number of deaths was recorded in    Region IV-A with 78,326 or 14.6 percent of the total deaths.  It was followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 72,235 deaths (13.5%) and Region III   with 62,297 (11.6%), which ranked second and third, respectively.  
 
On the other hand, the lowest number of registered deaths was recorded in Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with 1,634 deaths (0.3%).  (See Figure 2 and Table 2) 
 
 
Higher percentage of male deaths than female deaths
 
Higher percentage of male deaths than female deaths were observed from infancy to adulthood except at ages 80 and over.  Among males, the highest percentage of deaths occurred in ages 65 to 69.  On the other hand, most of the female deaths occurred when they reached the age of 85 and over. (See Figure 3 and Table 3)
 
 
More than half of registered deaths are not medically attended 
 
In 2014, it was observed that more than half of the total deaths that occurred in the country were not attended by any medical health personnel which accounted for 58.0 percent.  
 
Medically attended deaths are those attended by health authority, physician and other skilled health personnel.  
 
Among the 17 regions of the country, NCR got the highest record of medically attended deaths with 56.3 percent of its total deaths.  It was followed by CAR (49.0%) and Region X (45.3%).
 
On the other hand, the least medically attended deaths were recorded in ARMM with only 23.1 percent of its total deaths. (See Figure 4 and Table 4)
 
 
One-fifth of infant deaths occurs in NCR
 
There were 21,108 infant deaths registered nationwide.  Based on the record, NCR registered the highest number of infant deaths which accounted for 20.0 percent of the total infant deaths in the country.
 
It was followed by CALABARZON (17.7 %) and Central Luzon (10.2 %). It was noted that there were more male infants than female infants dying with sex ratio of 138 male infants per 100 female infants dying. (See Figure 5 and Table 5)
 
 
Region IV-A has the highest record of maternal deaths
 
Maternal death is the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental causes.  
 
A total of 1,570 maternal deaths were recorded in 2014.  Region IV-A recorded the highest number with 243 or 15.5 percent of the total maternal deaths, followed by NCR with 205 (13.1 %) and Region VII with 169 (10.8 %) maternal deaths.
 
On the other hand, ARMM had the least number of recorded maternal deaths which accounted for 0.6 percent only of the total maternal deaths. (See Figure 6 and Table 6)
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Explanatory Notes 
 
Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Death (Municipal Form No. 103) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars all throughout the country and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Information presented includes registered deaths which occurred from January to December 2014. Figures presented are not adjusted for under-registration.
