Fisheries production decreased annually by 5.1 percent in the third quarter of 2024

The total volume of fisheries production in the third quarter of 2024 was registered at 0.97 million metric tons. It diminished by 5.1 percent from the 1.02 million metric tons output in the same quarter of the previous year. Decreases in production were noted in all subsectors, namely, commercial, marine municipal fisheries, inland municipal fisheries, and aquaculture. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

The commercial fisheries production at 210.85 thousand metric tons posted an 8.4 percent decline from the same quarter of the previous year’s output of 230.19 thousand metric tons. The subsector comprised 21.8 percent of the total fisheries production during the third quarter of 2024. (Figure 2 and Table 1)

On marine municipal fisheries, the total volume of production was estimated at 196.13 thousand metric tons. This was 5.4 percent lower than the third quarter of 2023 level of 207.21 thousand metric tons. The subsector’s share to the total fisheries production during the quarter was 20.3 percent. (Figure 3 and Table 1)

During the quarter, inland municipal fisheries production was recorded at 46.26 thousand metric tons. It declined by 12.2 percent from the same quarter of the previous year’s estimates of 52.69 thousand metric tons. The subsector contributed 4.8 percent to the total fisheries production in the third quarter of 2024. (Figure 4 and Table 1)

Aquaculture production was registered at 512.47 thousand metric tons in the third quarter of 2024. This was lower by 2.8 percent from the previous year’s same period output of 527.15 thousand metric tons. Aquaculture subsector constituted the highest share of 53.1 percent to the total fisheries production during the quarter. (Figure 5 and Table 1)
Of the 21 major species, output reductions were primarily noted in roundscad (galunggong, -17.2%), big-eyed scad (matangbaka, -23.0%), milkfish (bangus, -6.9%), seaweed (-1.5%), and yellowfin tuna (tambakol/bariles, -18.6%). (Table 2)
On the other hand, increments were mainly reported in skipjack (gulyasan, 18.9%), P. Vannamei (putian, 19.4%), bigeye tuna (tambakol/bariles, 40.1%), blue crab (alimasag, 9.5%), and threadfin bream (bisugo, 7.2%). (Table 2)
