Year-on-Year

  • The General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region (NCR) picked up to 1.0 percent in July. It recorded a 0.9 percent growth last month and in July 2014, 3.1 percent. The heavily-weighted food index registered a higher annual mark-up of 3.4 percent. Meanwhile, slower annual upticks were seen in beverages and tobacco index at 3.9 percent; chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 1.3 percent; and manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index, 0.5 percent. In addition, annual declines were noted in the indices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials and machinery and transport equipment at -17.6 percent and -0.8 percent, respectively. Those for the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels and miscellaneous manufactured articles correspondingly remained at 1.2 percent and 1.7 percent.

By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

Measured from a month ago level, the GRPI in NCR increased by 0.5 percent in July.

  • The 1.6 percent mark-up in the heavily-weighted food index was attributed to price increments in chicken, eggs, beef, pork, some fish species, unmilled corn, matured coconut, vegetables, sugar and cooking oil. Moreover, prices of fresh fruits such as banana, pineapple, mango, papaya and apple also went up during the period.

  • A 0.1 percent gain in chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats index was brought about by add-ons in the prices of selected cleaning compounds and cosmetics and toilet preparations.

  • Price increases in electrical wires effected a 0.1 percent growth in the machinery and transport equipment index.

  • Prices of selected ready-made clothing and footwear were quoted higher during the month. Thus, the index of miscellaneous manufactured articles moved up by 0.1 percent.

  • Price rollbacks in gasoline, LPG, diesel fuel and kerosene further pushed down the index of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials by -2.6 percent.

  • A 0.1 percent decline in manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index was due to price cuts in selected construction materials such as cement, GI corrugated sheet and nails. Prices of school supplies such as folder, pad paper and notebook were also pegged lower during the month.

  • The indices of beverages and tobacco and crude materials, inedible except fuels posted a zero growth as their prices generally remained stable.
