GRPI in NCR continued to move upward in May 2022

The annual growth rate of GRPI in NCR accelerated to 4.1 percent in May 2022, from 3.5 percent in April 2022. This is the highest recorded annual growth rate since May 2011. In May 2021, the annual growth of the index was lower at 2.3 percent. (Tables A and 2)

The uptrend of the GRPI was mainly brought about by the higher annual growth in the food index at 4.6 percent in May 2022, from 3.6 percent in April 2022. This was followed by the machinery and transport equipment index with 0.9 percent annual growth, from 0.7 percent in April 2022. Also contributing to the uptrend in the GRPI were the higher annual increases in the indices of the following commodity groups:

          a. Beverages and tobacco, 4.6 percent;
          b. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, 34.5 percent;
          c. Chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 2.4 percent; and
          d. Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 2.7 percent.

Meanwhile, the decline in the index for crude materials, inedible except fuels slowed down in May 2022 with an annual rate of -0.2 percent, from -0.5 percent in April 2022.

On the contrary, a lower annual growth rate was observed in the miscellaneous manufactured articles index at 0.7 percent. (Table 2)
