Year-on-Year

The General Wholesale Price Index (GWPI) at the national level continued to decline. It moved by a negative rate of 3.7 percent in June. In May, it went down by 4.1 percent but in June 2014, it gained 4.9 percent. The downward trend was attributed to the drops in the annual rates of crude materials, inedible except fuels index at -3.8 percent and in mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index, -26.0 percent. In addition, the machinery and equipment index slowed to 1.8 percent during the month. On the contrary, higher annual increments were observed in food index at 4.5 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 2.9 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index, 2.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 2.1 percent. The beverages and tobacco index retained its annual growth of 8.7 percent.

  • Similarly, the GWPI in Luzon dropped by 4.2 percent in June. It resulted from the downward movements in the indices of crude materials, inedible except fuels at -4.5 percent and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -26.5 percent. A lower annual rate of 2.2 percent in the machinery and transport equipment index also contributed to the decrease. However, higher annual growths were noticed in the indices of food at 5.1 percent; beverages and tobacco, 9.9 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats, 3.6 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials, 2.9 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles, 2.5 percent.

  • In Visayas, the GWPI further went down by 1.0 percent in June. Reductions were still noted in the indices of crude materials, lubricants and related materials at -1.3 percent and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, -21.3 percent. Moreover, the annual growth of the food index eased to 5.4 percent; beverages and tobacco index, 7.0 percent; and chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.6 percent. Meanwhile, higher annual mark-ups were seen in manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index at 0.7 percent and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 1.1 percent. The machinery and transport equipment index moved at its last month’s rate of 0.5 percent.

  • A negative annual rate of 2.1 percent was also posted in the GWPI in Mindanao. This was mainly due to the further decline in the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index at -23.1 percent. Slower annual rates were likewise recorded in the heavily-weighted food index at 0.9 percent and in machinery and transport equipment index, 0.1 percent. The rest of the commodity groups retained their respective May rates while the chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index remained stable as it had a zero growth.

  • By Commodity Group, Month-on-Month

At the national level, the month-on-month growth of the GWPI picked up 0.8 percent in June. This was effected by the higher increments in the food index at 1.5 percent; chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats index, 0.6 percent; manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index, 0.5 percent; and miscellaneous manufactured articles index, 0.3 percent. On the other hand, the crude materials, inedible except fuels index dropped by 0.4 percent and machinery and equipment index, 0.1 percent. In addition, the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index decelerated to 0.5 percent while the beverages and tobacco index had a zero growth.

The food index in Luzon moved up at a faster pace of 2.2 percent in June as price mark-ups were observed in selected food items like beef, pork, tomatoes, onions, calamansi, sugar, coffee and some other vegetables. Meanwhile, downward movements were seen in the prices of rice, eggs, milk, some fish species and dried fish in Visayas. Thus, the group’s index in the area decreased by 0.4 percent. Similarly, the group’s index in Mindanao went down by 0.7 percent as prices of selected fruits, fish and vegetables were on the downward trend. At the national level, the movement in the group’s index was registered at 1.5 percent.

In Luzon, the monthly growth of the index for chemicals including animal and vegetable oils and fats went up 0.8 percent. It resulted from price gains in some basic industrial chemicals and coconut oil. On the contrary, lower prices of fertilizers pulled down the group’s index in Visayas by 0.1 percent and in Mindanao, -0.4 percent. Reduction in the prices of paints was likewise noticed in Mindanao. In the Philippines, the group’s index increased by 0.6 percent.

Prices of lumber, plywood, hollow blocks, paper products, flat bars, concrete pipes and G.I pipes in Luzon were on the uptrend during the month. Hence, the manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials index in the area rose 0.5 percent. Higher prices of paperboard pushed up its group’s index in Visayas by 0.1 percent. In Mindanao, add-ons in the prices of steel bars and other textile products raised its group’s index by 0.2 percent. The group’s national index grew by 0.5 percent.

A 0.3 percent increase in the miscellaneous manufactured articles index in Luzon was brought about by the additions in the prices of sanitary fixtures, textbooks, some magazines and office supplies. Upward price adjustments in selected sanitary fixtures, uPVC water pipes, some magazines and other paper products in Visayas caused a 0.1 percent uptick in its group’s index. Meanwhile, prices of miscellaneous manufactured articles in Mindanao generally remained stable during the month. At the national level, the index gained 0.3 percent.

A series of price hikes in gasoline raised the mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials index in Luzon by 0.6 percent. The price of gasoline also went up in Mindanao. Thus, its group’s index advanced by 0.8 percent. In Visayas, the index dropped by 1.0 percent as lower prices of diesel, kerosene and LPG were noted during the month. In the Philippines, the monthly change in the index was posted at 0.5 percent.

The crude materials, inedible except fuels index in Luzon went down by 0.6 percent. This was due to lower prices of copra in the area. On the other hand, a 1.7 percent add-on in the group’s index in Visayas was brought about by higher prices of copra. Meanwhile, there was no movement in the index in Mindanao. These mixed price trends effected a negative monthly rate of 0.4 percent in the group’s national index.

A 0.1 percent decline in the machinery and transport equipment index in Luzon was attributed to reduction in the prices of some electrical appliances in the area. However, prices of machinery and transport equipment generally remained stable in Visayas and Mindanao. At the national level, the index dropped by 0.1 percent.

A 0.1 percent growth in beverages and tobacco index in Luzon was brought about by the price mark-ups in selected softdrinks. In Visayas and Mindanao, prices of beverages and tobacco generally remained stable during the month. In the Philippines, the group’s index remained stable as it recorded a zero growth.
