Household population increases by 20.7 percent
Based on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing, the Philippines had a household population of 92,097,978 persons recorded as of May 1, 2010. This showed an increase of 15.8 million persons or 20.7 percent from 76.3 million persons in 2000 and an increase of 52.1 percent (31.5 million persons) from the 1990 census figure of 60.6 million persons.
Region IVA has the largest household population
Among the 17 regions across the country, Region IVA (CALABARZON) had the biggest share of the country's household population (12.6 million persons) in 2010. NCR (National Capital Region), which was the largest in terms of household population size in 2000 (9.9 million persons), came in second in 2010 with 11.8 million persons. The region with the least household population in 2010 was CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region) with 1.6 million persons. CAR was also the least populated region in 2000 (1.4 million persons).
Region IVA records highest increase in household population
In terms of increase in household population size from 2000 to 2010, Region IVA recorded the highest increase of 35.3 percent over the household population in 2000 (9.3 million persons). This was followed by Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) with an increase of 27.6 percent, then by Region III (Central Luzon) with 23.5 percent increase. The lowest increase in household population size was observed in Region I, which recorded an increase of 13.0 percent.
Number of households grows by one third
The number of households for the entire Philippines in 2010 reached 20.2 million, an increase of 32.0 percent compared to the number of households of 15.3 million in 2000, and almost two-folds of the number of households of 11.4 million in 1990.
Region IVA (2.83 million) was also the region with the highest number of households, while NCR and Region III followed with 2.76 million and 2.24 million, respectively. CAR with 352,403 households in 2010 and 263,851 households in 2000 was the region with the least number of households in both censuses.
Average household size stands at 4.6 persons
The 32.0 percent increase in the number of households, which is larger than the 20.7 percent increase in the household population in 2010, resulted in a lower average household size of 4.6 persons compared to an average of 5.0 persons per household in 2000 and 5.3 persons per household in 1990 for the entire country.
Across the regions, ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) had the highest average household size of 6.0 persons. Other regions with average household sizes higher than the national figure were: Region V with 4.9 persons; Caraga with 4.8 persons; and Regions VIII, IX, and X, with 4.7 persons each. NCR had the lowest average household size of 4.3 persons.
