Population growth rate decreased to 0.93 percent
Iligan City registered a total population of 285,061 persons in the year 2000 up from 273,004 in 1995. This translated to an average annual growth rate of 0.93 percent, a decrease of 2.63 percentage points from the 1990 to 1995 period.
The number of households rose to 57,179 higher by 5,550 households as compared to the 1995 figure. This gave an average household size of 4.97 persons, a slight decrease from 1995 (5.25) and lower than the national average of five persons.
Iligan City ranked fourth in Central Mindanao
Iligan City ranked fourth in terms of population size as compared to the three provinces and two highly urbanized cities (Cotabato, Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, Cotabato City, Marawi City) in Central Mindanao (Region XII). This city contributed 10.97 percent to the 2.6 million population of the region. At the national level, Iligan City shared 0.37 percent to the Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the Census 2000.
Barangay Tubod was the largest in terms of population size
Iligan City had a total of 44 barangays in 2000. Barangay Tubod registered the largest population with 27,778 persons, accounting for 9.74 percent of the entire city population. Suarez and Dalipuga followed with 5.63 and 4.56 percent, respectively. Kalilangan registered the lowest population with 751 persons, or 0.26 percent of the population of the city.
Iligan City had a median age of 21 years
Iligan City had a median age of 21 years. This meant that in 2000, half of the population were below 21 years old. The median age in 1995 was 20 years.
Sex ratio recorded at 98.8
Female population outnumbered their male counterparts with a sex ratio of 99 males for every 100 females.
Dependency ratio was 65
The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 65. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 65 dependents (61 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 4 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 ratio was lower than the 68.45 ratio reported in 1995.
More females belonged to the voting population than males
There were 161,140 persons or 56.53 percent of the total population belonging to the voting population (18 years old and over) of which, 79,250 were males and 81,890 were females.
Three in every five females belonged to the childbearing age group
Out of 143,420 females, 91,840 or 64.04 percent belonged to childbearing or reproductive age group (15 to 49 years ).
More female degree holders
Of the total population five years old and over, one out of three persons (35.21 percent) attended or finished elementary education while three in ten had reached high school. About 22 percent of the city population had either attended or completed college, were academic degree holders or with post baccalaureate courses.
There were more males who had attended or finished elementary education (50.93 percent) as compared to females (49.07 percent). On the other hand, those who had attended high school, college, were academic degree holders and with post baccalaureate were predominantly females.
More than half were Bisaya/Binisaya
Half (53.11 percent) of the household population in Iligan City classified themselves as Bisaya/Binisaya. About 32.01 percent considered themselves as Cebuano, and 6.60 percent Maranao. Other ethnic groups included Hiligaynon/Ilonggo (1.79 percent), and Higaonon (1.47 percent).
More widows than widowers
Of the household population 10 years old and over, 46.63 percent were married and 45.45 percent were single. The remaining eight percent were either widowed, divorced/ separated, with other marital arrangements or with unknown marital status. Among single persons the proportion for males (50.99 percent) was higher than for females (49.01 percent). The proportion of widowed females was noticeably higher (76.48 percent) as compared to the males (23.52 percent).
Single houses were most preferred
Majority (87.68 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. About one out of four occupied housing units was relatively new (built from 1996 to 2000).
Almost three out of four occupied housing units needed no repair or if needed one, with minor repair only.
Four in five housing units had galvanized iron/aluminum for the roof
As to the construction materials used for housing units, majority (83.39 percent) of the occupied housing units had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum. Forty five percent of the occupied housing units had walls made of wood.
Almost 40 percent of housing units had floor area of either 10 to 19 square meters or 30 to 49 square meters
About 19 percent of total occupied housing units had floor area of 10 to 19 square meters; almost the same as the proportion of housing units with 30-49 square meters (18.67 percent). About 16.46 percent of the housing units had 20-29 square meters, while 15.40 percent had less than 10 square meters.
ILIGAN CITY Iligan City is a highly urbanized city located at Lanao del Norte. It is bounded by the province of Misamis Oriental in the north, the province of Lanao del Sur in the south and the province of Bukidnon in the east. The city has an area of 730 square meters. Maria Cristina Falls is one of the most splendid among Iligan City's 20 waterfalls. This was harnessed to provide hydroelectronic power in 1952 that has spurred the industrial growth of the city. Iligan City has large industrial establishments such as manufacturing of steel, bricks, cement, wheat flour, and coconut oil among others. Average Household Size - average number of people who live in the household Growth Rate - the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population Median Age - the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old Sex Ratio - the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females Age-Dependency Ratio - the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population Household - a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days. Being highly urbanized city, the population of Iligan City was excluded in the population of Lanao del Norte. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO. |
