Population growth rate decreased to 2.12 percent

The total population of Lucena City, as of May 1, 2000, was 196,075 persons as compared to 177,750 persons recorded in the 1995 census. This figure translated to an annual population growth rate of 2.12 percent from 3.15 percent during the 1990 to 1995 period. If the annual population growth rate continues at 2.12 percent, the population of the city will double in about 33 years.

Lucena City ranked eight in Southern Tagalog in terms of population growth rate

Among the 11 provinces and one highly urbanized city in Southern Tagalog, Lucena City, ranked eight in terms of population growth rate. The growth rate of the city was lower than the national annual population growth rate of 2.36 percent.

Number of households rose to 40,261

The number of households rose to 40,261, higher by 3,705 households from that of the 1995 figure. This gave an average household size of 4.85 persons, slightly higher than the average household size of 4.84 persons in 1995.

Barangay Gulang-gulang was the largest in terms of population size

Lucena City comprised of 33 barangays where Barangay Gulang-gulang registered the largest population of 23,537 persons or 12 percent of the total city population. Ibabang Dupay and Dalahican followed with 10.84 percent and 8.81 percent, respectively. Ilayang Dupay (0.49 percent) and Barangy 6 (Poblacion) (0.48 percent had the smallest population.

Median age of 21 years

Lucena City had a median age of 21 years, the same as in 1995.

Sex ratio was recorded at 99

There were 97.4 thousand males and 98.7 thousand females in Lucena City. This gave a sex ratio of 99 males for every 100 females.

Dependency ratio was 66

The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 65.68. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years there were about 66 dependents, that is, 61 young dependents (aged 0 to 14 years) and five old dependents (aged 65 years and over). In 1995, the dependency ratio was recorded at 68.38.

Females dominated higher levels of education

Close to 37 percent of the total household population five years old and over had attended or completed elementary; about one-fourth (29.44 percent), high school; and more than fifteen percent had higher education.

There were more males (51.1 percent) than females (48.9 percent) among those who had attended or finished elementary, while females for the rest.

Almost all were Tagalogs

Almost all (95.23 percent) of the household population in Lucena City classified themselves as Tagalog. About two percent considered themselves as Bikol/Bicol (0.90 percent) and Cebuano (0.75 percent). Other ethnic groups included Bisaya/Binisaya (0.45 percent) and Masbateño/Masbatenon (0.29 percent).

Married persons outnumbered single persons

Of the total population 10 years old and over in Lucena City, there were more married persons (46.16 percent) than single persons (40.81 percent). The remaining 13 percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, with other arrangements or with unknown marital status.

Single houses were preferred by the majority

Majority (84.55 percent) of the occupied housing units were single houses. Two out of three housing units needed no repair or if needed one, with minor repair only. About 26 percent were built from 1996 to 2000.

Proportion of galvanized/iron/aluminum and concrete/brick/stone as materials for roof and outer walls increased to 80 percent and 30 percent, respectively

In 2000, the proportion of occupied housing units with roof made of galvanized/iron/aluminum accounted to 79.82 percent while 35.92 percent had concrete/brick/stone as the construction materials of the outer walls. These figures were from 67.97 percent and 23.99 percent, respectively in 1990.

LUCENA CITY

Lucena City is located in the southern part of the Quezon Province. It is bounded on the north by Mt. Banahaw, on the east and west by the Dumacaa and Iyam Rivers, and on the south by the Tayabas Bay.

During the 16th century, the Spaniards called the city Buenavista because of the awe-inspiring scenic beauty of the place. Several years after, the name was changed to Oroquieta. It was called Cotta in the 17th century because forts of cottas were built to defend the place from occasional Muslim piratical raids.

On November 5, 1879, the name Lucena was officially adopted in honor of the friar, Father Mariano Granja, who was a native of the town of Lucena in Andalucia, Spain.

On March 12, 1901, after the Americans established a civil government in the country, the provincial capital was transferred from Tayabas to Lucena.

On June 17, 1961, by virtue of Republic Act No. 3271, Lucena was made a chartered city. The noted tourists attractions are: the Perez Park, named after the famous Model Governor of Quezon, Felimon E. Perez, and the Quezon Monument, the biggest of its kind in the country.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Average Household Size- average number of people who live in the household

Growth Rate - the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population

Median Age - the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old

Sex Ratio - the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females

Age-Dependency Ratio - the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population

Household - a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No.591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.

Being a highly urbanized city, the population of Lucena City was excluded in the population counts of Quezon. As defined in the 1991 Local Government code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million persons based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.
