Majority of the households used electricity for lighting 

The number of households in the country based on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) reached 20.2 million.  This is an increase of 32.0 percent compared to the 15.3 million households in 2000.

In 2010, nearly 17.0 million households or 83.4 percent of the total households in the country used electricity as fuel for lighting.  The proportion of households using kerosene for lighting was recorded at 15.0 percent.  The rest of the households used LPG and oil for lighting.

 

Luzon regions had highest proportion of households with electricity for lighting

Electricity was the dominant fuel used for lighting in all regions.  NCR had the highest proportion of households among regions using electricity for lighting at 97.3 percent.  This was followed by Region III (93.4 percent), Region IVA (92.8 percent), Region I (91.8 percent), Region II (84.1 percent), and CAR (81.8 percent).

 

Batanes topped in terms of number of households using electricity for lighting

Among the provinces, excluding the highly urbanized cities, the use of electricity for lighting was highest in Batanes at 97.3 percent of its households in 2010.  This was followed by Ilocos Norte (96.8 percent), Pampanga (96.1 percent), Cavite (96.0 percent), Bulacan (95.7 percent), and Batangas (95.4 percent).

On the other hand, four out of 80 provinces in the country recorded the use of kerosene as its dominant fuel for electricity.  These provinces with more than half of its households using kerosene as fuel for lighting are Sulu with 56.9 percent, Masbate with 52.9 percent, Tawi-Tawi with 50.5 percent, and Palawan with 50.2 percent.

 

Wood was the prevailing fuel for cooking in the country

Wood was recorded as the fuel used most of the time for cooking by 44.1 percent of the total households, or 8.9 million households, in the country.  This porportion was the highest among other fuels for cooking.  LPG came in as second most common fuel for cooking with 36.9 percent of the total households.  Other types of fuel used most often by the rest of the households were charcoal (13.1 percent), kerosene (3.0 percent), electricity (2.6 percent), and other fuels (0.1 percent).

 

Caraga had the highest number of households using wood for cooking

Among the regions, Caraga recorded the highest number of households that used wood most of the time for cooking, with 78.8 percent. This was followed by Region X (78.2 percent), Region IX (69.7 percent), Region VII (68.8 percent), and Region XII (66.2 percent).

Meanwhile, four of the 17 administrative regions in the country used LPG most of the time for cooking.  These are NCR with 77.7 percent of the total households in the region, followed by CAR (53.4 percent), Region IVA (60.2 percent), and Region III (60.0 percent).  The use of charcoal for cooking was highest in Region IVB with 32.0 percent.

 

The use of wood for cooking was highest in Siquijor

At the provincial level, excluding the highly urbanized cities, Siquijor had the highest proportion of households that used wood most of the time for cooking (89.5 percent).  This was followed by Agusan del Sur (88.3 percent) and Zamboanga del Norte (88.1 percent).

 

Main source of water for drinking was community water system

In 2010, the main source of water system for drinking in the country was community water sytem as reported by 46.1 percent of the total households.  This percentage consist of 32.0 percent of the households using their own faucet and 14.1 percent of the households using shared faucet.  The rest of the households reported other main source of water for drinking as follows: bottled water (16.6 percent); shared, tubed/piped deep well (11.5 percent); own use, tubed/piped deep well (6.9 percent); dug well (5.6 percent); tubed/piped shallow well (4.6 percent); protected spring (4.0 percent); unprotected spring (1.7 percent); peddler (1.3 percent); lake, river, rain, and others (1.1 percent).

 

Community water system was also the main source of water for cooking

Likewise, the main source of water system for cooking was community water system with 58.7 percent of the total households in the country.  This figure is made up of 43.3 percent of the households using their own faucet and 15.4 percent of the households using shared faucet.  The rest of the households’ main source of water for cooking are as follows: shared, tubed/piped deep well (12.7 percent); own use, tubed/piped deep well (8.4 percent); dug well (6.5 percent); tubed/piped shallow well (5.3 percent); protected spring (3.6 percent); unprotected spring (1.7 percent); lake, river, rain, and others (1.2 percent); peddler (0.9 percent); bottled water (0.7 percent); and others.

 

Nine in 10 households had sanitary toilet

At the national level, 88.9 percent of the households in the country had sanitary toilets.  Sanitary toilet refers to flush toilet, either owned or shared, and closed pit type of toilet facility.  The rest of the households used other types of toilet facility as follows: open pit (4.2 percent), others (1.3 percent); while about 5.6 percent reported to have no toilet facility.
