EXPORTED GOODS DECREASE BY 7.5 PERCENT IN NOVEMBER 2016

The Philippines’ export sales amounted to $4.732 billion in November 2016, a 7.5 percent decrease from $5.118 billion recorded value in November 2015.  The decrease was attributed to seven major commodities out of the top ten export commodities for the month.  These include woodcrafts and furniture (28.9%), chemicals (26.2%), ignition wiring set and other wiring sets used in vehicles, aircrafts and ship (25.6%), machinery and transport equipment (25.4%), electronic products (7.9%), articles of apparel and clothing accessories (7.6%), and metal components (2.0%) (Table 1).

Furthermore, total merchandise exports for the period January to November 2016 registered a 5.2  percent decrease to $51.361  billion in 2016 from $54.168 billion in the same period of 2015 (Table 2).

 

EXPORTS OF ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS WENT DOWN BY 7.9 PERCENT

Electronic Products remained as the country’s top export with total receipts of $2.547 billion, accounting for 53.8 percent of the total exports revenue in November 2016. It went down by 7.9 percent from $2.764 billion registered in November 2015.  Components/Devices (Semiconductors), having the biggest share of 37.3 percent among electronic products, decreased by 9.7 percent to $1.764 billion in November 2016 from $1.954 billion in November 2015.

Other Manufactures ranked second with $337.99 million or 7.1 percent share to the total export receipts. It recorded an increase of 3.0 percent from November 2015 value of $328.08 million.

Machinery and Transport Equipment was the third top export earner in November 2016 with export revenue of $238.09 million.  Export sales for this commodity group dropped by 25.4 percent from $319.08 million in November 2015.

Woodcrafts and Furniture ranked fourth, with a contribution of 4.9 percent share to the total export receipts, recording sales of $230.66 million in November 2016.  It registered a 28.9 percent decrease from the previous year level of $324.61 million.

Ignition Wiring Set and Other Wiring Sets Used in  Vehicles, Aircrafts and Ships was recorded as the country’s fifth top export earner with value of $164.71 million or 3.5 percent share to total exports. It fell by 25.6 percent from $221.47 million in same period of 2015.

Rounding up the list of the top ten exports with corresponding export sales for the month of November 2016 were:

  • Coconut Oil (includes crude and refined) with $129.05 million, grew by 44.0 percent, registering the highest growth among the top ten exports;
  • Metal Components with $106.22 million, decreased by 2.0 percent;
  • Chemicals with $105.31 million went down by 26.2 percent;
  • Other Mineral Products with $74.29 million, accelerated by 39.0 percent; and 
  • Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories with $70.97 million, recorded a negative growth of 7.6 percent.

Total receipts from the top ten exports decreased by 9.6 percent in 2016 and reached $4.004 billion or 84.6 percent of the total exports.

EXPORTS OF MANUFACTURED GOODS DECREASE BY 10.6 PERCENT

Outward shipments of Manufactured Goods were valued at $4.136 billion, accounting for 87.4 percent of the total export receipts in November 2016.  It recorded a decrease of 10.6 percent from $4.626 billion recorded in November 2015 (Table 3).

Exports from Total Agro-Based Products, with a 6.6 percent share to total exports in November 2016, amounted to $311.18 million.   It went up by 28.6 percent from $241.95 million in November 2015.

Merchandise exports of Mineral Products, which shared 3.3 percent of the total exports revenue, increased by 3.9 percent from $151.86 million in November 2015 to $157.77 million in November 2016.

Special Transactions with a 2.2 percent share to total exports, increased by 22.7 percent to $105.87 million in November 2016 from $86.29 million in November 2015.

Petroleum Products, with 0.4 percent share, increased by 104.6 percent to $19.18 million in November 2016 from $9.38 million during the same month in 2015.

Moreover, sales from Forest Products, accounting for less than 0.1 percent share of the total exports, increased by 19.1 percent to $2.19 million in November 2016 from $1.84 million in same period of 2015.

JAPAN ACCOUNTS FOR 19.0 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL EXPORTS IN NOVEMBER 2016

Total export receipts from the country’s top ten market destinations for the month of November 2016 was valued at $3.934 billion, accounting for 83.1 percent share of the total export receipts (Table 5).

Japan including Okinawa remained as the country’s top export destination with revenue amounting to $898.83 million, comprising 19.0 percent share to total exports for November 2016.  It decreased by 21.8 percent from $1.149 billion recorded in the same month a year ago.

United States of America (USA) including Alaska and Hawaii ranked second, accounting 13.9 percent of total exports, with receipts valued at $655.46 million in November 2016. It recorded a decrease of 13.5 percent from $758.08 million in same month last year.

Hong Kong with 13.0 percent share to total exports, ranked third with shipments valued at   $615.43 million.  It grew by 4.7 percent from $587.80 million in same month a year ago.

People’s Republic of China ranked fourth with $555.04 million or 11.7 percent share of the total exports.  It increased by 5.2 percent from $527.37 million recorded in the same month last year.

Singapore placed fifth, representing a 6.5 percent share to total exports, with export earnings worth $307.01 million.  It declined by 8.6 percent from $335.81 million posted in November 2015.

Other top ten market destinations for November 2016 were: Republic of Korea, $212.43 million; Thailand, $201.61 million; Taiwan, $188.55 million;  Germany, $169.05 million; and Netherlands, $130.27 million.

Exports to Other Countries which was valued at $798.66 million accounted for 16.9 percent of the total exports for the month of November 2016.  Among the Other Countries, Malaysia (including Sabah and Sarawak) recorded the highest at $112.05 million or 2.4 percent of the total exports.

BULK OF EXPORTS ARE FOR COUNTRIES IN EAST ASIA

Majority of the country’s merchandise exports in November 2016 went to countries in East Asia,   accounting for 52.2 percent share to total exports valued at $2.472 billion.  It decreased by 7.0 percent from $2.659 billion of November 2015. 

Commodities exported to ASEAN member countries comprised 15.9 percent of the total exports in November 2016 and was valued at $751.06 million. This went down by 1.3 percent from $760.69 million posted in same month a year ago.

Exports to European Union member countries, with 11.7 percent share to total merchandise exports amounted to $554.28 million.  It recorded a 15.0 percent decrement from $651.96 million recorded in November 2015 (Table 6).

 

 

 

 

Technical Notes

 

Export trade statistics are compiled by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) from copies of export declarations filed with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) by exporters or their authorized representatives as required by law. PSA collects a copy of the accomplished form Export Declaration (ED – DTI form).  Aside from the hard copy of the ED, the output of the Automated Export Documentation System (AEDS) is being utilized to generate export statistics.  AEDS is a paperless transaction in lieu of the manual filling-up of export documents. The digitized copy of the AEDS is provided by BOC and PEZA to PSA on a monthly basis through email.

All documents (hard copies and e-files) received before the cut-off date which is every 25th day of the month are compiled, processed and generated in a monthly statistical tables for the preparation of Press Release.  All documents received after the cut-off date, however, are processed and included in the generation of the revised statistical tables.  Processing includes coding, editing, review and validation.  Revised statistical tables are made available 10 to 15 working days after the press release date.

The Press Release is due every 10th day of each month.  However, if the 10th day falls on a Saturday, release will be on Friday but if it falls on a Sunday or Monday the release will be on Tuesday.  If the release date falls on holiday, the date of release is moved accordingly.

The 2004 Philippine Standard Commodity Classification (PSCC) is used to classify the commodities at the most detailed level for statistical purposes.
