- Value of Production Index declines in April 2019
Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), the annual rate of Value of Production Index (VaPI) for manufacturing dropped by 10.8 percent in April 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the annual rate of VaPI went up by 21.8 percent.
The downtrend was mainly due to the two-digit annual decreases in the following major industry groups: tobacco products (-25.4%), petroleum products (-25.1%), leather products (-24.0%), food manufacturing (-23.9%), and basic metals (-23.0%). Refer to Tables1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index decreases
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) also posted a two-digit annual decrease of 14.0 percent in April 2019. It posted a two-digit annual growth of 21.0 percent in April 2018.
The decrease in VoPI in April 2019 was influenced by the downward movements noted in 11 major industry groups of which seven industry groups registered two-digit annual declines in VoPI. These were tobacco products (-29.2%), leather products (-25.5%), petroleum products (-24.3%), food manufacturing (-20.6%), furniture and fixtures (-19.6%), basic metals (-16.2%), and transport equipment (-11.8%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index increases at a slower rate
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) recorded an annual drop of 4.2 percent in April 2019. Likewise, it exhibited an annual decline of 19.2 percent in April 2018.
The downtrend was due to the annual decreases observed in nine major industry groups, with two-digit negative annual rates reported by the following: leather products (-23.3%), miscellaneous manufactures (-12.7%), and food manufacturing (-12.2%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index decreases
The Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) fell by 7.6 percent in April 2019. During the same period of the previous year, the annual growth was posted at 18.3 percent.
Ten (10) major industry groups registered annual decreases with leather products posting the highest annual decline of 24.8 percent followed by furniture and fixtures (-23.6%), and transport equipment (-11.1%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Average Capacity Utilization Rate in April 2019 is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate in April 2019 for total manufacturing was posted at 84.3 percent. Fifty-five percent or 11 of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:
- petroleum products (89.4%)
- basic metals (88.7%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.4%)
- machinery except electrical (86.3%)
- food manufacturing (85.2%)
- chemical products (85.2%)
- electrical machinery (85.0%)
- paper and paper products (83.8%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.2%)
- wood and wood products (81.9%)
- textiles (80.3%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than one-fourth (27.4%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in April 2019. About 54.3 percent of the total establishments during the month operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.3%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Tables B and 6.
