- Value of Production Index declines in August 2019
Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), the Value of Production Index (VaPI) decreased at an annual rate of 7.9 percent in August 2019. During the same period of the previous year, the annual growth rate of VaPI was posted at 4.1 percent.
The decrease of VaPI in August 2019 was due to the annual decreases in the indices of nine major industry groups led by petroleum products (-61.8%), transport equipment (-18.5%), electrical machinery (-14.3%) and miscellaneous manufactures (-14.0%). Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.
- Volume of Production Index likewise drops
The Volume of Production Index (VoPI) fell by 9.3 percent in August 2019. In the same month of the previous year, VoPI posted an annual growth rate of 3.1 percent.
Seven major industry groups registered annual decreases with petroleum products posting the highest annual decline of 59.0 percent, followed by furniture and fixtures (-43.4%), transport equipment (-19.0%), miscellaneous manufactures (-17.7%) and electrical machinery (-11.1%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index slips
The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) went down by 2.9 percent in August 2019 from a two-digit annual growth of 12.5 percent in the same month of the previous year.
The slowdown was mainly due to the annual decreases in 14 major industry groups with two-digit reduction reported in textiles (-14.3%), electrical machinery (-13.7%) and miscellaneous manufactures (-11.3%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index declines
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) also posted a decrease of 4.4 percent in August 2019. It posted a two-digit annual growth of 11.4 percent in August 2018.
The decline was brought about by the 10 major industry groups with two-digit decreases as follows: furniture and fixtures (-42.6%), miscellaneous manufactures (-15.1%), textiles (-11.3%) and electrical machinery (-10.5%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for petroleum products
Average capacity utilization rate for total manufacturing in August 2019 was posted at 84.3 percent. Sixty-five percent or 13 of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:
- petroleum products (89.2%)
- basic metals (88.6%)
- machinery except electrical (86.6%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.4%)
- food manufacturing (85.2%)
- chemical products (85.1%)
- electrical machinery (85.0%)
- printing (84.1%)
- paper and paper products (83.8%)
- rubber and plastic products (83.5%)
- wood and wood products (82.1%)
- leather products (80.7%)
- textiles (80.2%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than one-fourth (26.9%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in August 2019. About 55 percent of the total establishments during the month operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.3%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Tables B and 6.
