- Value of Production Index rebounds in January 2016
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing significantly rose to 26.5 percent in January 2016 compared with the negative 1.1 percent in January 2015, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was brought about by the three-digit growth experienced by chemical products (309.6%), particularly for drugs and medicine sub-sector. Other major sectors that pulled up the performance of VaPI were tobacco products (49.6%), food manufacturing (19.1%) and beverages (11.7%). Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production also exhibits two-digit growth
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) likewise posted 34.3 percent increment in January 2016 compared with 2.6 percent during the same period last year. Chemical products contributed significantly to the growth with 312.4 percent, followed by major sectors that registered two-digit growth in VoPI, namely: tobacco products (49.4%), machinery except electrical (23.6%), food manufacturing (20.2%), electrical machinery (19.2%) and beverages (10.1%). Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales Index gains
Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) climbed to 30.9 percent in January 2016 from a decline of 5.9 percent in the same month last year. The VaNSI of 10 out of 20 major sectors expanded, led by chemical products and leather products with a three-digit growth of 320.8 percent and 105.5 percent, respectively. This was followed by four other sectors posting two-digit increases, namely: wood and wood products (30.9%), printing (24.0%), food manufacturing (19.3%) and miscellaneous manufactures (19.1%). Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales Index likewise accelerates
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) stepped up as it posted a two-digit annual growth of 39.0 percent in January 2016. This was attributed to the increases in VoNSI observed in eight major sectors, led by chemical products (323.7%) and leather products (102.0%), outpacing the increments in 12 major sectors. Other major sectors that significantly contributed to the increment in VoNSI were leather products wood and wood products (53.7%), printing (26.0%), food manufacturing (20.4%), machinery except electrical (18.9%), miscellaneous manufactures (15.2%) and rubber and plastic products (14.8%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Average Capacity Utilization Rate in January 2016 is 83.5 percent
Average capacity utilization rate in January 2016 for total manufacturing was recorded at 83.5 percent. Fifty-five percent or 11 of the 20 major industries operated at 80 percent and above capacity utilization rates. These were:
- basic metals (88.4%)
- petroleum products (88.2%)
- non-metallic mineral products (86.3%)
- machinery except electrical (85.1%)
- food manufacturing (84.5%)
- electrical machinery (84.5%)
- chemical products (84.0%)
- paper and paper products (83.0%)
- rubber and plastic products (82.4%)
- wood and wood products (80.7%)
- printing (80.4%)
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 25.9 percent in January 2016. About 56.4 percent of the establishments operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity while 17.7 percent of the establishments operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Table 6 and B.
