- Value of Production remains at single-digit growth
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry recorded a slow growth of 3.0 percent in July 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Factory performance of basic metals showed a significant improvement, with 71.7 percent increase, followed by other three (3) major sectors that posted two-digit growth, namely: food manufacturing, footwear and wearing apparel, and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
VaPI, however, on a month-on-month basis, declined further by 1.8 percent compared to only (revised) 0.5 percent slump in June 2006. Double-digit improvements in twelve (12) major sectors were offset by the eight (8) major sectors that reported decreases. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continues to drop
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) on a yearly basis fell by 10.4 percent after shrinking (revised) 6.1 percent in June 2006. This was due to the declining factory output in fourteen (14) of the 20 major sectors, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, wood and wood products, tobacco, petroleum products, non-metallic mineral products, transport equipment, leather products and beverages. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
Likewise, VoPI continued to tumble on a monthly basis as it posted a decrease of 2.8 percent in July 2006. Though twelve (12) major sectors showed positive trends, this was offset by the decreases reported in eight (8) major sectors. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.
- Value of Net Sales improves
On a year-on-year basis, Value of Net Sales continued to pick up at 6.7 percent in July 2006, mainly due to the two-digit increases observed in the following sectors: basic metals, rubber products and petroleum products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
Meanwhile, Value of Net Sales on a monthly basis slipped by 0.8 percent from the previous month's (revised) increase of 1.1 percent. This was brought about by the two-digit decreases in sales value of the non-metallic mineral products and beverages. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales decreases
Volume of Net Sales registered a year-on-year decline of 5.5 percent, which is an improvement from the previous month's (revised) drop of 6.8 percent in June 2006. Significant reduction in sales volume were noted in the following major sectors: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, non-metallic mineral products, wood and wood products, publishing and printing, leather products and tobacco. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a monthly basis, Volume of Net Sales also went down by 2.0 percent in July 2006 compared to the previous month's (revised) growth of 0.2 percent. Major sectors that made significant contributions to the decrease were non-metallic mineral products and beverages. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in July 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.2 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, petroleum products, leather products, basic metals, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6..
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 8.9 percent in July 2006. More than half or 59.8 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 31.3 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

r-revised - Technical Notes
Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.
Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
