  • Value of Production Index contracts in July 2019

Based on the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI), Value of Production Index (VaPI) for manufacturing showed an annual drop of 7.3 percent in July 2019. During the same month of the previous year, the annual growth rate of VaPI was higher at 11.1 percent.

The decline of VaPI in July 2019 can be attributed to the decreases in the indices of five major industry groups with petroleum products posting the highest negative rate of 76.5 percent.  Refer to Tables 1 and 1-A.

  • Volume of Production Index decreases

Volume of Production Index (VoPI), likewise, declined by 8.1 percent in July 2019. In the same month of the previous year, the annual growth rate of VoPI was higher at 10.1 percent.

The slowdown was mainly due to the annual decreases in six major industry groups with petroleum products and furniture and fixtures registering the highest annual decrements of 75.8 percent  and 24.8 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables  1-B and 2.

  • Value of Net Sales Index slightly drops

The Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) slipped to 1.3 percent in July 2019 from a two-digit growth of 18.3 percent in the same month of the previous year.

The decrease in VaNSI was mainly influenced by the decrements noted in eight major industry groups with two-digit decreases reported in basic metals (-17.5%), miscellaneous manufactures (-15.4%), electrical machinery (-14.8%) and leather products (-12.8%). Refer to Tables 2-A   and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales Index likewise declines

The Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) went down by 2.2 percent in July 2019.  It posted a two-digit annual growth of 17.2 percent in July 2018.

The slowdown in VoNSI was driven by the downward movements noted in nine major industry groups with two-digit reduction observed in three major industry groups: furniture and fixtures (-26.8%), electrical machinery (-11.1%) and basic metals (-10.7%). Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Figure 3

  • Average Capacity Utilization Rate is highest for basic metals

Average capacity utilization rate for total manufacturing in July 2019 was posted at 84.3 percent. Sixty percent or 12 of the 20 major industries had at least 80 percent capacity utilization rates during the month. These were:

  • basic metals (88.7%)
  • petroleum products (88.5%)
  • machinery except electrical (86.6%)
  • non-metallic mineral products (86.4%)
  • food manufacturing (85.3%)
  • electrical machinery (85.1%)
  • chemical products (85.0%)
  • paper and paper products (83.9%)
  • rubber and plastic products (83.4%)
  • wood and wood products (82.1%)
  • textiles (80.3%)
  • printing (80.2%)

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was more than one-fourth (27.9%) of the total number of establishments for manufacturing in July 2019. About 53.6 percent of the total establishments during the month operated at 70 percent to 89 percent capacity, while almost one-fifth (18.5%) operated below 70 percent capacity. Refer to Tables B  and 6.
