- Value of Production grows at a slower pace in May 2011
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing posted a slower growth in May 2011 at 2.4 percent, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was mainly accounted for the reduction in value of production in the paper and paper products, non-metallic mineral products and fabricated metal products. However, seven major sectors contributed significant increases, namely: furniture and fixtures, petroleum products, beverages, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
On a monthly comparison, VaPI recorded an increment of 4.1 percent from a 4.9 percent decline in April 2011. Fifteen major sectors influenced the increase in production values led by furniture and fixtures registering an increase of 44.8 percent. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production decelerates
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) on an annual basis registered to 0.9 percent from the previous month's growth of 2.2 percent. This maybe attributed to the diminished production outputs of paper and paper products and non-metallic mineral products. However, six of 11 major sectors reported two-digit increases in production output, namely: furniture and fixtures, beverages, miscellaneous manufactures, chemical products, rubber and plastic products and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
On the other hand, VoPI, on a month-on-month basis improved to 4.3 percent in May 2011 compared with 4.5 percent decline in the previous month. This is explained by the expansion in production output observed in following major sectors: furniture and fixtures, tobacco products, petroleum products, beverages and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales accelerates
On a yearly basis, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) grew 9.2 percent in May 2011. This was attributed to the two-digit growth in sales value reported by six major sectors, namely: food manufacturing, petroleum products, footwear and wearing apparel, beverages, chemical products and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
VaNSI, on a month-on-month basis, recovered as it registered a growth of 4.5 percent in May 2011. This was contributed by 16 major sectors, with two-digit increases noted in the following: paper and paper products, publishing and printing, beverages and machinery except electrical. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales likewise grows in May 2011
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) gained further in May 2010 registering a year-on-year growth of 7.7 percent. This is explained by the better performances in production output in following major sectors: furniture and fixtures, beverages, chemical products, footwear and wearing apparel, publishing and printing, food manufacturing, paper and paper products and miscellaneous manufactures. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
On a month-on-month basis, VoNSI rebounded posting a 4.6 percent growth in May 2010 from the previous month's drop of 7.7 percent. Sixteen major sectorsaccounted for the growth in sales output with significant increases noted in the following: petroleum products, publishing and printing, paper and paper products, beverages and machinery except electrical. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
- Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in May 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.2 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber and plastic products, machinery except electrical and textiles. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 17.2 percent in May 2011. About 60.2 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.
Capacity Utilization | Percent Share |
---|---|
Below 50 percent | 4.6 |
50 percent - 59 percent | 7.4 |
60 percent - 69 percent | 10.6 |
70 percent - 79 percent | 20.4 |
80 percent - 89 percent | 39.8 |
90 percent - 100 percent | 17.2 |
- Response Rates
The response rates for the May 2011 MISSI and PPS are 83.5 percent and 90.6 percent, respectively. Refer to Tables 7 and 8

- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
