  • Value of Production drops for the third month

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry continued its downtrend as it posted a 3.7 percent decline in November 2006 compared with the year-ago figure, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Machinery excluding electrical posted the highest decrease of 48.8 percent, followed by five other major sectors with two-digit decreases in production value. These were textiles, petroleum products, tobacco, rubber products and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

On a month-on-month basis, VaPI expanded, posting a 2.3 percent increase in November. The expansion was significantly contributed by petroleum products and fabricated metal products which posted a high turnaround of 16.4 percent and 10.2 percent in November, respectively. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

  • Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continues to fall

Volume of Production Index (VoPI) declined at a slower rate of 15.3 percent growth in November compared with the 16.6 percent in October. The decrease was due to the two-digit contraction in manufacturing output of the following eight major sectors: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, textiles, tobacco, petroleum products, rubber products, footwear and wearing apparel and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

On a month-on-month basis, VoPI increased by 2.6 percent faster than the revised 1.5 percent in October. The rise was fueled by the strong demand for petroleum products and fabricated metal products which posted an increase of 19.1 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively, after recording negative growth rates in October. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

  •

  • Value of Net Sales maintains positive growth

On a year-on-year basis, Value of Net Sales posted an increment of 4.1 percent in November 2006, mainly due to the 44.9 percent growth of basic metals. The two-digit increases in the growth of food manufacturing, publishing and printing and rubber products also contributed to the positive sales performance of the manufacturing industry. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

However, Value of Net Sales on a month-on-month basis, decreased by 1.6 percent in November 2006. Fourteen of the 20 major sectors posted decreases in net sales value led by footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

  • Volume of Net Sales continues to drop

The Volume of Net Sales continued its downtrend as it posted a 5.2 percent year-on-year decrease in November 2006. Machinery excluding electrical continued to exhibit a decline in net sales volume, registering 79.4 percent in November 2006. Other major sectors that significantly influenced the reduction in sales volume were: electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, furniture and fixtures, petroleum products and leather products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Likewise, Volume of Net Sales on a month-on-month basis fell by 1.1 percent in November 2006 after posting an increase of 3.7 percent in the previous month. This was due to the significant reduction in sales volume of footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

  • Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in November 2006 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.3 percent. Sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, petroleum products, miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, leather products, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6..

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) comprised 10.3 percent in November 2006. More than half or 58.3 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity and 31.4 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

  • Technical Notes

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
