·  Value of Production in November 2007 posts a negative growth

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry went down by 0.8 percent in November 2007, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Reductions in factory output were observed in 12 major sectors, with two-digit decreases noted in the following: basic metals, rubber products, textiles, footwear and wearing apparel, and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1 .

However, VaPI on a month-on-month basis continued to increase at a slower rate of 0.6 percent in November 2007. The growth in production output were reported by 8 major sectors with two-digit increase led by leather products at 16.7 percent. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production Index in November 2007 likewise decreases

On a yearly basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) dipped further by 2.9 percent in November 2007. This was due to the low production output in the following major sectors: basic metals, rubber products, textiles, footwear and wearing apparel, publishing and printing, chemical products, and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

On the other hand, on a month-on-month basis, VoPI maintained a positive growth of 0.8 percent in November 2007. Growth in production output was exhibited in 8 major sectors led by leather products, with an increase of 16.7 percent. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

·  Value of Net Sales remains upbeat in November 2007

Value of Net Sales rose at a slower rate as it posted a year-on-year growth of 1.8 percent in November 2007. Major sources of increases were observed in the following major sectors: furniture and fixtures, transport equipment, wood and wood products, beverages, petroleum products, publishing and printing, and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a month-on-month basis, however, Value of Net Sales fell by 4.1 percent in November 2007. The decline were exhibited by 14 major sectors, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: basic metals, textiles, rubber products, miscellaneous manufactures, and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales declines further

Volume of Net Sales continued to slide by 2.3 percent in November 2007. This was brought about by the significant sales reduction in the following major sectors: leather products, basic metals, textiles, rubber products and food manufacturing. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

On a month-on-month basis, Volume of Net Sales likewise decreased by 4.2 percent in November 2007. Fifteen (15) of the 20 major sectors posted decline in sales volume, with two-digit decreases observed in the following: basic metals, textiles, rubber products, and machinery excluding electrical. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in November 2007 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.6 percent. Ten (10) major sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: machinery excluding electrical, petroleum products, leather products, miscellaneous manufactures, basic metals, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, food manufacturing, rubber products, and chemical products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 10.3 percent in November 2007. More than half or 56.0 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 33.7 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

For the 2007 monthly issues, the 2000 based series of MISSI indices and PPI are simultaneously released with the 1994 based indicators. The 2000 based series for 2001 to 2006 were earlier made available in separate Special Release.

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
