- Value of Production decelerates in October 2011
Value of Production Index (VaPI) for total manufacturing dropped 6.0 percent in October 2011, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). This was brought about by the poor production performance of nine major sectors, with two-digit decreases reported by the following: basic metals, food manufacturing, electrical machinery, machinery except electrical, footwear and wearing apparel and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
VaPI, on a monthly basis, further fell by 1.9 percent in October 2011. Eleven major sectors accounted for the declines in value of production led by the following: electrical machinery, paper and paper products, footwear and wearing apparel, basic metals, and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.
- Volume of Production likewise declines in October 2011
Volume of Production Index (VoPI) exhibited a year-on-year decrease of 6.3 percent in October 2011. Significant reduction in production output was observed in the following major sectors: basic metals, machinery except electrical, food manufacturing, electrical machinery and footwear and wearing apparel. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
VoPI, on a month-on-month comparison, posted a slight decrement of 2.5 percent in October 2011. Five of 11 major sectors influenced the decrease in production output, namely: electrical machinery, footwear and wearing apparel, paper and paper products, basic metals and fabricated metal products. Refer to Tables 1-B and 2.
- Value of Net Sales posts a two-digit growth in October 2011
On a yearly comparison, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) continued to accelerate as it reflected a two-digit increment of 12.3 percent in October 2011. The major contributing factor was the expansion in sales of 12 major sectors of manufacturing industry, with two-digit increases observed in the following: petroleum products, tobacco products, leather products, chemical products, beverages, food manufacturing and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
On a monthly basis, VaNSI improved as it posted a growth of 2.9 percent from a decrement of 4.6 percent in September 2011. This was attributed to three major sectors, namely: leather products, electrical machinery and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.
- Volume of Net Sales grows
Volume of Net Sales Index (VoNSI) increased in October 2011 posting an annual growth of 12.0 percent. Thirteen of 20 major contributed to the growth in volume of net sales with significant increases observed in the following: furniture and fixtures, transport equipment, leather products, chemical products, tobacco products, beverages and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
VoNSI, on a month-on-month change, climbed 2.2 percent in October 2011, compared with the previous month's decline of 5.1 percent. Major sectors that showed two-digit growth in sales volume were leather products, electrical machinery and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.
-
Capacity Utilization
Average capacity utilization in October 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.1 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, miscellaneous manufactures, electrical machinery, rubber and plastic products, chemical products, paper and paper products, machinery except electrical and leather products. Refer to Table 6.
The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 15.2 percent in October 2011. About 60.7 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 24.1 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

r-revised- Technical Notes
The Monthly Integrated of Selected Industries (MISSI) is one of the designated statistical activities undertaken by the National Statistics Office to provide flash indicators on the performance of growth-oriented industries in the manufacturing sector. The survey gathers monthly data on employment, compensation, production, net sales, inventories and capacity utilization.
The MISSI utilizes the Laspeyres-type method of index computation where the weights are computed from the value of production of the Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI). Rebasing of data series is undertaken as soon as new CPBI are available.
For the 2010 MISSI index series with base year of 2000, the weights of the major sectors and sub-sectors were computed from the results of the 2000 CPBI for manufacturing establishments with average total employment of 20 and over.
The indicators generated from the 2010 MISSI are Value of Production Index (VaPI), Volume of Production Index (VoPI), Value of Net Sales (VaNSI), and Volume of Net Sales (VoNSI). However, the VoPI and VoNSI are derived indicators utilizing the Producer Price Index as deflator.
The industry coverage of the 2010 MISSI conforms with the amended 1994 PSIC groupings. There are 20 major sectors as shown below with 10 further disaggregated into sub-sectors.
