·  Value of Production improves in September 2007

Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry recovered at a slower rate of 0.7 percent in September 2007 compared to a (revised) decrease of 4.5 percent during the previous month, according to the preliminary results of the Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI). Twelve major sectors reported expansion in production, with two-digit increases noted in the following: leather products, wood and wood products, chemical products, transport equipment and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1 .

Likewise, VaPI on a monthly basis posted growth of 0.4 percent in September 2007 from the (revised) decrease of 1.8 percent in August 2007. Although 11 major sectors posted decreases, this was offset by the increases in nine (9) major sectors with two-digit increases observed in basic metals and publishing and printing. Refer to Tables 1-A and 1.

·  Volume of Production Index is still down

On a yearly basis, Volume of Production Index (VoPI) continued to tumble as it posted a decrease of 1.0 percent, but this was an improvement from the (revised) decrease of 5.7 percent in August 2007. Nine (9) major sectors reported decrease in factory output, outpacing the increases in the 11 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

On a month-on-month basis, VoPI posted an increase of 0.4 percent in September 2007 from its previous month's decrease (revised) of 1.4 percent. This was mainly due to the increases observed in nine (9) major sectors that offset the decreases reported by 11 major sectors. Refer to Tables 2 and 1-B.

·  Value of Net Sales grows further in September 2007

However, Value of Net Sales continued to rise as it posted a year-on-year growth of 2.8 percent in September 2007. Major sectors that reported substantial increase in sales were the following: transport equipment, publishing and printing, chemical products, paper and paper products, beverages and non-metallic mineral products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

On a monthly basis, Value of Net Sales improved by 2.4 percent in September 2007 from a drop (revised) of 1.3 percent in August 2007. This was due to the two-digit sales increase in the following major sectors: leather products, transport equipment and paper and paper products. Refer to Tables 2-A and 3.

·  Volume of Net Sales also shows improvement

On a yearly basis, Volume of Net Sales reflected a slow growth of 0.2 percent in September 2007 compared to the previous month's (revised) decrease of 0.6 percent. This was brought about by the impressive sales performances of the following major sectors: transport equipment, furniture and fixtures, paper and paper products, beverages, miscellaneous manufactures and chemical products. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

Volume of Net Sales, on a monthly basis, stepped up by 2.5 percent in September 2007 from its previous month's drop (revised) of 0.6 percent. Major sectors that made significant increases in sales volume were the following: leather products, paper and paper products and transport equipment. Refer to Tables 2-B and 4.

·  Capacity Utilization

Average capacity utilization in September 2007 for total manufacturing was estimated at 80.6 percent. Major sectors that registered more than 80% capacity utilization rates were the following: basic metals, machinery excluding electrical, miscellaneous manufactures, paper and paper products, leather products, petroleum products, electrical machinery, rubber products, food manufacturing and chemical products. Refer to Table 6.

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 11.0 percent in September 2007. More than half or 56.9 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 32.1 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

·  Technical Notes

For the 2007 monthly issues, the 2000 based series of MISSI indices and PPI are simultaneously released with the 1994 based indicators. The 2000 based series for 2001 to 2006 were earlier made available in separate Special Release.

Starting 2006, weights for the Producer Price Index (PPI) are based from the results of the 2003 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) for manufacturing establishments with average total employment (ATE) of 20 and over.

Data of non-responding sample establishments are estimated based on previous records and other available sources. Revisions to the preliminary estimates are done upon receipt of actual reports of late respondents.
