Population growth rate at 1.97 percent

Nueva Vizcaya registered a total population of 366,962 persons in the 2000 Census. This represented an annual growth rate of 1.97 percent. If the current population growth rate continues, the population of the province was expected to double in about 35 years. The number of households rose to 74,400, higher by 6,681 households from the 1995 figure. The average household size was 4.9 persons, slightly lower than the national average of five persons.

Solano was the largest in terms of population

Among the 15 municipalities in the province, about 39 percent of the total population of Nueva Vizcaya resided in the municipality of Solano (14.0 percent), Bayombong (13.8 percent) and Bambang (11.0 percent). These top three municipalities were also the top three municipalities in 1990 and 1995 in terms of population size. The other twelve municipalities had a share of less than nine percent each. The least populous municipality was Alfonso Castaneda with 1.3 percent share to the total provincial population.

Nueva Vizcaya ranked third in Cagayan Valley

Nueva Vizcaya was the third most populated province in Cagayan Valley with 13.0 percent of the 2.8 million persons in the region. At the national level, Nueva Vizcaya contributed less than half percent to the total Philippine population of 76.5 million as recorded in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing.

Sex ratio was recorded at 105.2

Male population outnumbered their female counterparts with a sex ratio of 105.2 males for every 100 females. There were more males than females in the age group 0 to 59 years. On the other hand, females dominated their male counterparts in the age group 60 years and over.

Nueva Vizcaya had a median age of 21 years

In 2000, Nueva Vizcaya had a median age of 21 years, higher than the 1995 median age of 20 years. The age group 0 to 14 years, which made up 37.3 percent of the total population of the province was lower by 1.3 percentage points as compared to the 1995 proportion. On the other hand, the oldest group (65 years and over) which accounted for 4.0 percent was higher by 0.3 percentage point to the 1995 figure. Majority (58.7 percent) of the population of Nueva Vizcaya belonged to the economically active population aged 15 to 64 years. This was 1.0 percentage point higher than the 1995 proportion.

Seven dependents for every ten economically active persons

The overall dependency ratio in 2000 was 70. This meant that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 70 dependents (63 persons aged 0 to 14 years - young dependents; and 7 persons aged 65 years and over - old dependents). The 2000 overall dependency ratio was lower than the ratio of 73 recorded in 1995.

More female than male degree holders

Of the total household population five years old and over, 42.8 percent had attended or completed elementary education. Twenty eight percent had either attended or finished high school while 9.6 percent attended college. A small proportion of 4.6 percent were academic degree holders. Majority of those who attended or finished elementary (53.3 percent), high school (50.6 percent) and post secondary (52.5 percent) were males. Females on the other hand, dominated college and post baccalaureate levels.

Majority were Ilocanos

Majority (62.3 percent) of the household population in Nueva Vizcaya classified themselves as Ilocano. Others considered themselves as either Ikalahan/Ilanuan (11.6 percent), Ifugao (6.3 percent), Tagalog (5.9 percent), and Ibaloi/Inibaloi (4.4 percent). Other ethnic groups included Ayangan (0.8 percent) and Bugkalot (0.3 percent).

About 44.1 percent were still single

Almost half (47.0 percent) of the household population 10 years old and over were married while 44.1 percent were single. The remaining nine percent were either widowed, divorced/separated, common law/live-in or with unknown marital status.

Housing unit occupancy rate was almost 100.0 percent

The total housing units in Nueva Vizcaya was 72,983, of which 72,967 or almost 100.0 were occupied. Most of occupied housing units (95.7 percent) were single houses. This registered a ratio of 1.02 household per occupied housing unit or a ratio of 5.02 persons per occupied housing unit. The remaining 4.3 percent were either duplex, commercial/industrial/agricultural, multi-unit residential buildings, etc. Seven out ten housing units needed no repair/minor repair, and 31.8 percent were built from 1996-2000.

About 78.8 percent had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum

As to the construction materials used, 29.3 percent of the occupied housing units had outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone compared to 12.4 percent in 1990. On the other hand, 78.8 percent had roof made of galvanized iron/aluminum.

Nueva Vizcaya

Nueva Vizcaya is located at the southernmost part of Cagayan Valley. It is surrounded by mountain ranges of Sierra Madre on the east, Cordillera on the west, and Caraballo on the south. The province has a total land area of 3,903.9 square kilometers, which constitutes 1.3 percent of the total land area of the Philippines.

Nueva Vizcaya was created as a politico-militar province by a royal decree in April 1841. The capital then was established in Camarag, the northeast portion of the province. With the creation of the province of Isabela in 1856, Bayombong, which is located in the northeast portion of Nueva Vizcaya became the capital town.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Average Household Size - average number of people who live in the household

Growth Rate - the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population

Median Age - the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old

Sex Ratio - the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females

Age-Dependency Ratio - the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population

Household - a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11th census of population and 5th census of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.
