The Statistical Commission of the United Nations declared October 20, 2010 as the first ever World Statistics Day. Premised on the core values of service, integrity and professionalism, the occasion hopes to raise public awareness, appreciation and trust in official statistics and to acknowledge achievements of the global statistics systems.
"Let us make this historic World Statistics Day a success by acknowledging and celebrating the role of statistics in the social and economic development of our societies and by dedicating further efforts and resources to strengthening national statistical capacity," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated in his letter to the heads of national statistical systems and countries all over the globe.
In the Philippines, the National Statistics Office (NSO) has lined up various activities in line with the celebration of the World Statistics Day. Hanging of streamers will be done in NSO Central Office and Field Offices. A Seminar on Statistics and Its Crucial Role in Governance will be conducted simultaneously in 20 selected provinces. Demonstration on the Use of Scanners for Census Data Processing will likewise be held in the Central Office.
