The Philippines, represented by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), has been re-elected to the Governing Council (GC) of the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UN SIAP) for the 2025-2028 term.

PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General expressed gratitude for the trust and recognition given to the PSA for its commitment to quality official statistics and significant contribution to strengthening statistical capacity and development in the Asia-Pacific region with the country's re-election to the governing body

This is the fourth time the Philippines has been elected to the Governing Council. The country previously served for the 2013-2015, 2016-2018, and 2022-2024 terms and will now serve the 2025-2028 term alongside other countries, including China, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, and Thailand.

The vote was made during the 81st Session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

As a member of the UN SIAP Governing Council, the PSA will continue its efforts to champion regional cooperation for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, integration of alternative data sources into official statistics, greater use of local-level statistics, and strengthened country-level national quality assurance frameworks.

The Governing Council is responsible for setting the institute's overall direction, including its program implementation and policies.

The UN SIAP serves as the regional training arm of the ESCAP. It provides professional statistics training for government officials and others working on official statistics to strengthen knowledge and build skills of national governments' employees to produce, use, and share reliable statistics, including monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals and the development of fact-based policy.
