Explanatory Note Data on deaths presented in this press release were obtained from the timely and late registered deaths at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars throughout the country and submitted to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs) for encoding. Information presented includes the deaths that occurred from January until June 2021 (cut-off date is as of 12 August 2021 on the submission of encoded data files to the PSA-Central Office from PSOs). Figures presented herein are still preliminary and may differ in the final counts. Deaths of Filipinos abroad are not yet included in the data, only those who died in the country but whose usual residence is abroad. |
More deaths were registered for the first half of 2021 than in the same period in 2020
The preliminary number of registered deaths from January to June 2021 reached 361.48 thousand, higher by 25.0 percent than the total registered deaths of 289.26 thousand in the same period in 2020. In 2021, all months posted year-on-year increases in the registered deaths—January with an increase of 3.76 thousand (7.0%), February with 6.53 thousand (14.1%), March with 15.08 thousand (32.8%), April with 22.15 thousand (49.5%), May with 18.93 thousand (37.7%), and June with 5.77 thousand (11.9%). Deaths in the National Capital Region (NCR)
All cities in NCR had more registered deaths from January to June of 2021 than in the same period in 2020
NCR registered 48.83 thousand deaths in the first half of 2021, or a 24.3 percent increase from the 39.28 thousand deaths registered in the same period in 2020. Year-on-year increases were recorded in all its cities/municipalities. The City of Pasig, which had the highest percent increase, recorded an increment of 44.3 percent, followed by the City of Mandaluyong at 43.7 percent. Meanwhile, the City of Muntinlupa (1.9%) and the City of Navotas (5.0%) recorded the lowest increases during the said period. (Figure 2 and Table 3)

The same cities registered the most deaths for the period January to June of 2020 and 2021
Quezon City recorded the highest number of registered deaths in the NCR from January to June of 2021 at 11.27 thousand or 23.1 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. The city similarly had the highest share during the same period in 2020, with 8.27 thousand or 21.1 percent of the total deaths in the region. The City of Manila recorded the second highest with 7.16 thousand registered deaths (14.7%) while the City of Caloocan came in third with 6.10 thousand (12.5%) of the total registered deaths in NCR, maintaining their respective ranks in 2020. These three cities comprised nearly half of the total registered deaths in NCR in the first six months of 2020 (48.9%) and more than half in the same period in 2021 (50.3%).
On the other hand, Pateros still had the lowest number of deaths registered in NCR with 280 deaths or 0.6 percent and 218 deaths or 0.6 percent of the total registered deaths in the region from January to June of 2021 and 2020, respectively. (Table 3)
