Population of Tacloban City increased at the rate of 2.16 percent annually

Based on the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH), Tacloban City, a highly urbanized city in the province of Leyte, posted a total population of 221,174 persons as of May 1, 2010.  This is larger by 42,535 persons compared to its total population of 178,639 persons counted in the 2000 CPH.  The increase in the population count from 2000 to 2010 translated to an average annual population growth rate (PGR) of 2.16 percent.  This is lower than the 2.70 percent annual PGR of the city between the census years 1990 and 2000.

If the average annual PGR recorded at 2.16 percent during the period 2000 to 2010 continues, the population of Tacloban City would double in 32 years.

Forty years ago, the population of Tacloban City was only 76,531 persons.  This population size is more than one third of the population of the city in the 2010 CPH.
