The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) granted clearance for the conduct of the Survey on Traditional Healing, Nutrition, and Practices on the First 1000 days of the Mamanwa Tribe in Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte. The survey will be conducted by the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte, in coordination with the Department of Health – Caraga (DOH-Caraga).

The survey aims to explore the uses of traditional plants, diet, and practices of pregnant women, lactating mother, and children aged below 2 years old among the Mamanwa tribe in Sitio Landing, Barangay Camam-onan, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte. Specifically, it aims to:

  1. determine the current nutritional status of the pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children below 2 years old of the Mamanwa Tribe;
  2. determine the diet and practices during each life cycle stage; and
  3. determine the current practices on the use of traditional plants in each life cycle stage.

Major data items to be collected in the survey are the following:

  1. Socio-demographic profile of the respondents;
  2. Uses of traditional plants;
  3. Ethnopharmacological data of plants;
  4. Knowledge, attitude, and practices of pregnant and lactating women
  5. Nutritional status of the pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children below 2 years old; and
  6. Current practices on the use of traditional plants in each life cycle stage.

With a total budget of PhP 996,628.80, a complete enumeration will be conducted in October to November 2022 covering traditional healers, lactating mothers, and pregnant women in Sitio Landing. Results of the surveys are expected to be released in December 2022.

The survey was reviewed and cleared for conduct under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism being implemented by the PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 10625 to:

  1. ensure sound design for data collection;
  2. minimize the burden placed upon respondents;
  3. effect economy in statistical data collection;
  4. eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts; and
  5. achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.

In line with this, the PSA enjoins all traditional healers, pregnant women, and lactating mothers with infants below 2 years old residing in Sitio Landing, Barangay Camam-onan, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte and members of Mamanwa tribe to participate in the enumeration by providing the required information.
