The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), through its Standards Service (SS), has formally granted clearance for the conduct of the Department of Science and Technology - Science and Technology Information Institute’s (DOST-STII) “Conducting a Baseline Study on the Attitude of Filipinos Towards Science and Technology” Survey. This statistical activity will be implemented by the Philippine Survey and Research Center.
The main objective of the study is to gather relevant insights on the general public’s and media organizations’ attitude and consumption behavior regarding science and technology (S&T) news and stories. Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Determine baseline understanding of the communication actors, medium of communication, and audience behavior when it comes to S&T information;
2. Identify emerging gaps and opportunities for exploration in the field of Science Information and Communication; and
3. Utilize findings to help DOST-STII design future communication strategies for S&T information and content.
The major data items to be collected from respondents include Awareness and Consumption of S&T News/Stories (in general); Awareness and Consumption of S&T News/Stories Sources And Programs; Attitude and Consumption of S&T News/Stories (in general); and DOST S&T News/Stories Drill Down. With an allocated budget of approximately PhP 1.3 million, the survey will target a total of 500 individuals in select urban areas nationwide.
Data collection is scheduled to commence in May 2025, and the survey results are expected to be released in December 2025.
The survey has been reviewed and cleared under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism implemented by the PSA pursuant to Rule 28 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 10625.
The SSRCS covers statistical surveys conducted and/or funded by government agencies, government-owned- and/or -controlled corporations, and local government units. It aims to:
1. Ensure a sound design for data collection
2. Minimize the burden placed upon respondents
3. Effect economy in statistical data collection
4. Eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts
5. Achieve better coordination of government statistical activities
The PSA strongly encourages all sampled individuals to actively participate in the survey by providing accurate and truthful information for data-driven evaluation of public perception and media management on S&T information.
