
20 February 2025 – QUEZON CITY. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) successfully conducted the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Data Dissemination Forum as part of the 35th Civil Registration Month celebration. This year’s theme, “Building a Resilient, Agile, and Future-Fit Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System”, highlighted the importance of CRVS in national development. The event was held at the PSA Headquarters,/span> in Quezon City and was livestreamed on the PSA official Facebook Page and YouTube channel.
The forum intends to increase awareness and appreciation of the 2023 vital statistics data, and to discuss its implications to users and stakeholders. A total of 145 participants attended, from various agencies including members of the Inter-Agency Committee on CRVS, former officials of the PSA and predecessor statistical agencies, representatives from partner institutions, the media, the academe, and PSA officials and personnel.
In his message, Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, emphasized the importance of CRVS system being more than a mere bureaucratic process, but the foundation of the countless aspects of individual and societal development. He also acknowledged the challenges, particularly on the issue of late registration of vital events, but emphasized the progress made by PSA in ensuring the sanctity and integrity of vital records. He also discussed the Birth Registration Assistance Project as one of the initiatives of the PSA in promoting social inclusion. He stressed the importance of statistics in identifying the areas of concern.
Usec. Mapa presented key statistics, including figures on adolescent births, child marriages, and the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases as the leading causes of death. He emphasized that these data empower the planners and the decision makers to better understand the scope of the issues, develop policies, and adopt an appropriate support system. He concluded his message by encouraging collective efforts to build a more resilient, agile, and future-ready CRVS system.
The forum featured audio-visual presentations that provided a closer look at the compilation and processing of vital statistics as well as the 2023 to 2028 CRVS Strategic Plan. The results of the 2023 statistics on births, marriages and deaths were presented by Assistant National Statiscian Marizza B. Grande, Ms. Marjorie B. Villaver, and ANS Adrian A. Cerezo, respectively.
Dr. Maria Midea M. Kabamalan, of the University of the Philippines Population Institute; Undersecretary Lisa Grace S. Bersales, PhD, of the Commission on Population and Development; and Director Bently D. Roxas of the Department of Health, served as resource persons and discussed the implications of the findings on death statistics to policies and program development based on the presented data. The discussion highlighted the impacts of the vital statistics data, underscoring the need for the formulation of policies, programs, and interventions.
The forum concluded with a closing message from Officer-In-Charge Deputy National Statistician Clemente S. Manaog, MNSA. He thanked the speakers and discussants for their valuable insights and knowledge reiterated the significance of having and timely data, in ensuring that “no one is left behind”.
