The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) granted clearance to the conduct of the 2017 Annual Survey of Philippine Business Industry (ASPBI) on 26 February 2018. The survey will be conducted from 16 April to 13 July 2018 in about 30,000 establishments nationwide.
 
The objective of the 2017 ASPBI is to provide planners and policy-makers in government as well as the private sector with information on the levels and structure of economic activities of the formal sector in the entire country in 2017.
 
The 2017 ASPBI will collect and generate data on employment, income, expense, inventories, tangible fixed assets, intangible assets and total assets. It will provide derived indicators such as average compensation, labor productivity of industries and value added useful in evaluating the growth of the formal sector at the national and regional levels. It will also generate data about the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - Business Processing Management (BPM) industries. 
 
A total budget of PhP 73.1 million will be utilized for personal services, maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) such as travelling expenses, training, supplies and printing of materials. 
 
Meanwhile, key results from the latest available ASPBI (2014) are as follows:
  • The Philippines had a total of 226,682 establishments in the formal sector in 2014. 
  • Manufacturing sector had the highest number of workers with 1,223,577 accounting for 22.2 percent of the total employment in establishments in 2014.
  • Total compensation paid to employees in 2014 amounted to about PhP 1.4 trillion. More than one-fifth or 22.8 percent of the total compensation paid in 2014 was contributed by Manufacturing, totaling PhP 311.2 billion.
  • Total income earned by establishments in 2014 amounted to PhP 14.3 trillion. Manufacturing, the top income generator, accounted for 32.5 percent of total income at PHP 4.6 trillion. Second highest was Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles with 25.5 percent share and earning PHP 3.6 trillion in 2014. Financial and Insurance Activities placed third, contributing 8.7 percent share or an income of PHP 1.2 trillion. 
 
Final results and special releases on the 2017 ASPBI will be published from June to August 2019. 
 
The 2017 ASPBI was reviewed and cleared for conduct under the Statistical Survey Review and Clearance System (SSRCS), a mechanism being implemented by the PSA by virtue of Rule 28 of Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) No.10625 to:                                                 
 
  • ensure sound design for data collection;
  • minimize the burden placed upon respondents; 
  • effect economy in statistical data collection; 
  • eliminate unnecessary duplication of statistical data collection efforts; and 
  • achieve better coordination of government statistical activities.
 
In line with this, establishments are enjoined to support the said statistical activity.
