Month-on-Month Growth Rates

The month-on-month growth rate of the seasonally adjusted CPI for all items at the national level inched up 0.4 percent in June from 0.3 percent in May. It resulted from upward movements in the seasonally adjusted CPI for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house at 0.6 percent and 0.5 percent in June from 0.3 percent in May and education, 0.7 percent from 0.4 percent. Meanwhile, slower monthly increases were recorded in the following indices: alcoholic and beverages and tobacco and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.3 percent from 0.5 percent; clothing and footwear, 0.4 percent from 0.8 percent; and health, 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent. The adjustment in the seasonally adjusted CPI for recreation and culture remained at 0.2 percent.

Seasonal factors such as tuition fee hikes and higher demand of selected items observed during the start of the school year pushed up the indices for all items; alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; recreation and culture; education; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services. These seasonal factors however did not affect the health index.

The monthly increment of the seasonally adjusted CPI in NCR for alcoholic beverages and tobacco and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house correspondingly grew 0.5 percent and 0.9 percent in June from 0.3 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. On the other hand, the education index went up at a slower pace of 0.1 percent from 0.3 percent. The transport index further dropped to -0.6 percent from -0.4 percent while movement in the aggregate seasonally adjusted CPI for non-food was still at 0.3 percent.

The seasonal factor of bigger demand for some items raised the indices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco; non-food; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; transport; and education in the area.

In AONCR, the monthly changes in the seasonally adjusted CPI for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house correspondingly rose 0.5 percent and 0.4 percent in June from 0.2 percent in May and education, 0.8 percent from 0.4 percent. On the contrary, the alcoholic beverages and tobacco and health indices improved to 0.2 percent from 0.5 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 0.5 percent from 0.6 percent. The seasonally adjusted CPI for clothing and footwear retained its last month’s rate of 0.4 percent while that for recreation and culture index posted a zero growth from 0.2 percent.

The monthly gains in the indices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco; clothing and footwear; housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; health; recreation and culture; education; and restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services in AONCR were pulled up by the increase in tuition fees and higher demand for selected items during the start of the school year.
