1. Philippines

The country’s inflation for the bottom 30% income households increased to 5.0 percent in June 2022, from 4.3 percent in May 2022. In June 2021, inflation rate was posted at 4.3 percent. Average inflation for this income group of consumers for January to June 2022 was registered at 3.7 percent. (Table A and Figure 1)

The uptrend in the overall inflation was due to higher annual increment in the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 5.0 percent, from 4.1 percent in the previous month. In addition, the transport index also contributed with 6.8 percent annual growth, from 5.2 percent in May 2022. Moreover, annual increases were higher in the indices of the following commodity groups during the month:

a. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 7.9 percent;
b. Clothing and footwear, 2.5 percent;
c. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 5.9 percent;
d. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 3.3 percent; and
e. Restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services, 3.3 percent.

The rest of the commodity groups retained their previous month’s annual growth rates. (Tables 3 and 4)

Similarly, food inflation at the national level increased further to 5.1 percent during the month, from 4.1 percent in the previous month. In June 2021, its annual rate was recorded at 3.6 percent. (Table 7)

The higher food inflation in June 2022 was primarily brought about by the higher annual growth in the fish and seafood index at 6.5 percent, from 5.2 percent in May 2022. In addition, the meat index recorded a faster annual increment of 8.7 percent in June 2022, from 6.9 percent in the previous month. The rest of the food groups recorded higher annual inflation during the month. (Table 5)

2. National Capital Region (NCR)

Inflation in NCR increased further to 5.1 percent in June 2022, from 4.1 percent in May 2022. In June 2021, inflation in the area also stood at 4.1 percent. (Tables A and 3)The higher inflation in the region was influenced mainly by the higher annual growth of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 4.9 percent, from 3.4 percent in the previous month.

Uptrend in the inflation in NCR was mainly brought about by the higher annual increase in the index of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 6.1 percent. The housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels index, with an annual growth of 5.2 percent, also contributed to the higher inflation during the period. In addition, faster inflation were recorded in the following commodity groups:

a. Clothing and footwear, 1.1 percent;
b. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 1.7 percent;
c. Health, 2.2 percent;
d. Transport, 8.2 percent;
e. Recreation and culture, 0.4 percent; and
f. Restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services, 1.6 percent.

However, the alcoholic beverages and tobacco, and communication indices registered slower growth than their previous month’s rates, while education index registered zero growth during the month. (Tables 3 and 4)

3. Areas Outside NCR (AONCR)

Following the trend in the Philippines and in NCR, inflation in AONCR rose further to 5.0 percent in June 2022, from 4.3 percent in May 2022. In June of the previous year, inflation was observed at 4.3 percent. (Tables A and 3)

The higher inflation in the area was primarily due to the higher annual increase in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index at 4.9 percent in June 2022, from 4.1 percent in the previous month. The transport index, with 6.8 percent annual increment, from 5.3 percent in the May 2022, added to the uptrend.

Annual hikes were, likewise, higher in the indices of the following commodity groups:

a. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 7.9 percent;
b. Clothing and footwear, 2.6 percent;
c. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 5.9 percent;
d. Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 3.4 percent; and
e. Restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services, 3.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the rest of the commodity groups retained their previous month’s rates. (Tables 3 and 4)

Compared with their respective inflation rates in May 2022, all regions in AONCR had higher inflation during the month. The highest inflation remained in Region III (Central Luzon) at 6.8 percent, while the lowest was in Region II (Cagayan Valley) at 3.1 percent. (Table 4)
