For the third quarter of 2018, volume of hog production expanded to 541.03 thousand metric tons. Output for this quarter was 2.55 percent higher compared with the 2017 level of 527.60 thousand metric tons.
All regions except MIMAROPA reported increases in production. Central Luzon, CALABARZON and Western Visayas were the top three producing regions, posting a positive growth of 4.87 percent, 0.55 percent, and 0.50 percent, respectively. These three regions accounted for 44.28 percent of the total hog production. (Table 1)
As of 1 October 2018, total swine population reached 13.13 million heads. This was slightly higher by 0.87 percent compared with the previous year’s inventory of 13.01 million heads.
Both backyard and commercial farms reported increases in swine population by 0.83 percent and 0.95 percent, respectively. Stocks in backyard farms accounted for 63.55 percent of the total swine population.
Central Luzon CALABARZON, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao remained to be the regions with highest swine population. These regions accounted for 55.55 percent of the country’s total swine inventory. (Table 2)
The average farmgate price of live hogs for slaughter in the third quarter reached PhP 115.41 per kilogram, liveweight. This was 5.96 percent higher than average farmgate price in 2017 at PhP 108.91 per kilogram, liveweight. (Table 3)

This Swine Situation Report presents the swine industry in terms of volume of production, inventory by farm type and average farmgate price. This report was prepared to serve as ready reference for PSA’s various clients and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. It is released quarterly in January, May, August and November every year.
Concepts and Definitions
Volume of Production refers to the volume of locally-raised animals disposed for slaughter which include animals shipped-out for slaughter. This is expressed in metric ton, liveweight.
Inventory refers to the actual number of domesticated animals present in the farm as of a specific reference date.
Farmgate Price refers to the price received by farmers, livestock and poultry raisers for the sale of their produce at the first point of sale net of freight.
