Jane Lois E. de Veyra, a BS Computer Science student of the University of the Philippines-Visayas, bested 16 other regional champions in order to bag the national championship trophy in the Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ). The PSQ, a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes that began in 1992 and spearheaded by the National Statistics Office and the Philippine Statistical Association, was held on December 7, 2004 at the Assembly Hall of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Manila.
After three rounds of grueling tests on statistical theories and applications, De Veyra who represented Region 8 was declared the 13th PSQ National Champion and was awarded P25,000, a PSQ medal, and a specially designed trophy. Her coach, Engr. Roberto EscaÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â±o Capon, was also given a special recognition and a cash prize of P12,500.
Ranked second to fifth places were Joanne R. Roa of Region 10; Janree Ruark C. Gatpatan of Region 6; Wilheim John N. Sy of the National Capital Region; and Jakechris P. Sicad of Region 5, respectively. All five national winners and their coaches shared a cash pot of over a hundred thousand pesos, among other prizes.All 17 contestants were awarded plaque of recognition and PSQ medals. The colleges/universities where the 17 were enrolled as well as the high schools where they graduated were also given certificates of appreciation.
