Competition among young statistics whizzes heats up as provincial eliminations for the 2005 Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) are now on. Regional finals are set on November 15 while the national championship will be on December 6 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Assembly Hall in Malate, Manila.

The PSQ is a countrywide competition among college freshmen spearheaded by the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) since 1992 to instill the value of statistics among Filipino youth and win greater public cooperation in government statistical activities.

The 14th PSQ is expected to gather statistics wizards from various regions. Unlike in the past years when a regional champion automatically qualifies for the national finals, a participant now has to garner not less than 15 points in the regional finals to compete for the national championship.

Last year, Jane Lois E. de Veyra of Region 8 bested 16 other regional champions in order to bag the national championship trophy. Ranked second to fifth places were Joanne R. Roa of Region 10; Janree Ruark C. Gatpatan of Region 6; Wilheim John N. Sy of the National Capital Region; and Jakechris P. Sicad of Region 5. All five national winners and their coaches shared a cash pot of over a hundred thousand pesos, among other prizes.

Meanwhile, the NSO and the PSA have already identified various committees to ensure the success of this year's PSQ. The National Steering Committee includes NSO Administrator Carmelita N. Ericta as Chairperson; Dr. Jose Ramon G. Albert of the PSA as Co-chairperson; and, Ms. Nelia R. Marquez (PSA), Dr. Romulo A. Virola (National Statistical Coordination Board), and Director Gervacio G. Selda Jr. (Statistical Research and Training Center) as members. Also in the said committee are representatives from the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Science and Technology and Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.
