Female agricultural operators are older than their male counterpartsFigure 1

Based on 2002 Census of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF), male operators dominated agriculture sector. Of the 4.8 million agricultural operators, 89 percent are males while only 11 percent are females.

Agricultural operators had a median age of 46 years. This means that half of the agricultural operators were below 46 years old. The median age among male agricultural operators was 45 years old while among female agricultural operators was 56 years old. This means that female agriculture operators were generally older than their male counterpart.

More than one-fourth of female agricultural
operators completed secondary education and higher

Majority of the agricultural operators have elementary education. The same proportion reported also among females and males.

Female agricultural operators who have completed secondary education and higher (high school graduate, college undergraduate, college graduate and post baccalaureate) comprised more than 28 percent.

Females dominate as members in households with agricultural operators

Of the 14 million household members in households with agricultural operators, about 40 percent were engaged in agricultural activities. Majority (80%) of the said household members were engaged in agricultural activity in own holding. Those who were engaged in other holding and in both own and other holdings comprised six percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Three in every five members in household with agricultural operators were females. The same figure was reported among those who engaged in agricultural activities as well as those who were not engaged in agricultural activity.

Majority (63%) of those engaged in own holding were females while males dominated those engaged in other holding (55%).

The Census of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF) is a large‐scale government operation geared towards the collection and compilation of statistics on the agriculture and fisheries sectors of the country. The objective is to gather comprehensive data on farm characteristics, information on the size, location, tenure status, irrigation system, crops planted, livestock and poultry raised and determine the type and number of equipment and facilities used in the operation of agricultural activities whether owned or rented.

The reference period of the 2002 Census of Agriculture (CA 2002) was from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002. However, data on livestock and poultry for CA 2002 were recorded as of the time of visit of the enumerators, i.e., anytime from March 3 to April 5, 2003, while the 1991 CAF data for livestock and poultry were recorded as of August 31, 1991. Moreover, the reference period applied for the temporary crops during CA 2002 was from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002 while as of December 31, 2002 for the permanent crops. During the 1991 CAF, the reference period used for recording data on temporary and permanent crops was the past 12 months.

Agricultural Operator is a person who takes the technical and administrative responsibility of managing a holding. He/She is responsible for making day‐to‐day decisions in operating the holding, including the management and supervision of hired labor. He/She may work on the land alone or with members of his household, or may not work on the land but may employ others to work on the land. He may or may not be the owner of the land.

Engaged in agricultural activity in own holding refers to those done in the holding operated by a member of the household.

Engaged in agricultural activity in another holding refers to those done by a household member working in a holding of another household.

Data limitation on forms from the 2002 CAF refers to the geographic area of the operator's residence. This may not be the same as the actual location of the farm or farm parcels.
