2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry: Human Health and Social Work Activities

The industry section on human health and social work activities (Section Q) includes industry groups covering the activities on the provision of health care by trained medical professionals in hospitals and other facilities and social work activities.

The 2018 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (CPBI) for human health and social work activities section excludes public medical, dental and other health services.

The highlights of results of the 2018 CPBI for human health and social work activities industry section is presented in Figure 1. This figure shows the number of establishments engaged in the industry section, total employment created, total revenue generated, total expenses incurred, and total value added generated.

Medical and dental practice activities was the leading industry group in terms of the number of establishments

The 2018 CPBI reported a total of 9,456 establishments engaged in human health and social work activities with a growth rate of 46.9 percent from the 2012 CPBI. (Table A, and Figure 1)

Medical and dental practice activities led the industry group in terms of the number of establishments with 7,159 (75.7%) establishments, followed by hospital activities with 1,283 (13.6%) establishments. (Table 1A, and Figure 2)

National Capital Region had the highest number of reported establishments

At the regional level, National Capital Region (NCR) had the highest number of reported establishments with 1,392 (14.7%). Ranked second was Central Luzon with 1,062 (11.2%), followed by CALABARZON with 854 (9.0%) establishments. Meanwhile, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was reported having the least number of establishments in 2018, with 17 establishments or 0.2 percent. (Table 3A, and 3)

Hospital Activities had the highest number of employees in 2018

The total employment of human health and social work activities industry section in 2018 was 210,372 employees, this posted an increase of 49.8 percent from 140,438 employees reported in 2012. (Table A)

The average employment per establishment was estimated at 23 in 2018. Hospital activities had an average of 118 persons per establishment, this was the highest among the industry groups and higher than the national level estimate. This was followed by residential care activities for mental retardation, mental health and substance abuse; and other residential care activities, not elsewhere classified (n.e.c.), both with an average of 15 employed persons per establishment. NCR generated the highest employment

Across regions, NCR had the highest number of workers hired with 57,730 employees or 27.4 percent of the total employment, followed by CALABARZON with 30,065 employees or 14.3 percent. The least number of workers was recorded in ARMM with 391 employees or 0.2 percent. (Table 3A, and 3)

Moreover, NCR had the highest number of employees per establishment ratio among the regions with an average of 42, higher than the national estimate of 23 employees per establishment. (Table 3A, and 4)

Hospital activities industry group hired more sub-contract workers

A total of 12,834 workers were hired under sub-contract agreement in human health and social work activities in 2018. Majority of sub-contracted workers was reported by hospital activities with 10,099 workers. (Table 1)

Among the regions, NCR hired the biggest number of workers under sub-contract agreement or through manpower agencies with 4,148 workers or 32.3 percent of the total, followed by CALABARZON and Central Luzon with 1,784 and 1,651 workers, respectively. (Table 3)

Average annual compensation was at PhP 236.3 thousand

The total compensation paid to health workers in 2018 (PhP 48.79 billion) increased by 101.5 percent compared to 2012 (PhP 24.21 billion). This is equivalent to PhP 236.3 thousand average annual compensation per paid employee. (Table A)

Among industry groups, hospital activities reported the highest compensation at PhP 35.1 billion, followed by medical and dental practice activities of PhP 10.7 billion. (Table 1)

Across the regions, NCR paid the highest compensation to its employees amounting to PhP 20.1 billion. CALABARZON ranked second with PhP 6.1 billion while the least compensation was paid in ARMM with PhP 53.7 million. (Table 3)

Of the nine industry groups, three reported to have higher averages than the computed national average compensation, namely: other social work activities without accommodation, n.e.c. with PhP 322.5 thousand; social work activities without accommodation for the elderly and disabled with PhP 270.2 thousand; and medical and dental practice activities with PhP 236.5 thousand. Total revenue reached PhP 250.0 billion; hospital activities industry generated the highest

The human health and social work activities generated a total revenue of PhP 250.0 billion in 2018. Among the industry groups, hospital activities were the top contributor with total revenue of PhP 173.8 billion (69.5%). This was followed by medical and dental practice activities with PhP 60.0 billion (24.0%), and other social work activities without accommodation, n.e.c. with PhP 11.8 billion (4.7%). (Table 1A, and Figure 5)

Total expense reached PhP 195.2 billion; hospital activities spent the most

Total expense incurred by the section in 2018 amounted to PhP 195.2 billion, with hospital activities; and medical and dental practice activities being the top spenders with total expense of PhP 137.9 billion (70.6%) and PhP 46.1 billion (23.6%), respectively. (Table 1, 1A, and Figure 5)

NCR recorded the biggest share in revenue and expense among regions

At the regional level, NCR recorded the largest share in total revenue with PhP 105.0 billion (42.0%), followed by CALABARZON with PhP 30.2 billion (12.1%), and Central Visayas with PhP 17.4 billion (7.0%). Meanwhile, ARMM registered the least revenue of PhP 148.4 million (0.1%). (Table 3A, and Table 3)

NCR likewise incurred the highest total expense amounting to PhP 76.7 billion (39.3%). CALABARZON ranked second with total expense amounting to PhP 24.9 billion (12.7%), followed by Central Visayas with PhP 15.2 billion (7.8%). (Table 3A, and 3)

Revenue per expense ratio was recorded at 1.28

The revenue per expense ratio, or the revenue generated per peso spent was estimated at 1.28 for human health and social work activities industry section. 

Among industry groups, the following exceeded that of the national ratio: other social work activities without accommodation, n.e.c. recorded the highest with 1.62; other residential care activities, n.e.c. with 1.39; and medical and dental practice activities with 1.30. (Table 2)

Hospital activities accounted for almost 70 percent of total value added

The value-added generated by human health and social work activities was estimated at PhP 123.5 billion. 

Among industry groups, hospital activities contributed the biggest share to total value added amounting to PhP 86.4 billion or 69.9 percent. Medical and dental practice activities came next with PhP 28.7 billion or a share of 23.3 percent. (Table 1A, and Figure 6)

NCR contributed about half of total value-added

Among regions, NCR contributed almost half (45.0%) or PhP 55.6 billion of the total value added. CALABARZON and Central Luzon followed with generated value added of PhP 13.7 billion (11.1%) and PhP 8.3 billion (6.7%), respectively. Meanwhile, ARMM accounted for the least value added with PhP 94.9 million (0.1%). (Table 3A, and 3)
